UNIFORM
Throughout this term, and as we head into the cooler months, we have noticed that a number of students have started to arrive at school in a variety of clothes, different to our school uniform. While we realise that a cold snap can get families by surprise, we are now well and truly into winter and expectations are that students should be in school uniform every day. If there is an issue with uniform, a note of explanation from a parent/carer is required.
Our fantastic school uniform shop covers all uniform requirements for our students, and has also been having pop-up second-hand stores, which have been highly valued by our community. I encourage you to place an order or email the uniform shop, should you require any additional uniform. In addition, if uniform is an expense that is causing financial hardship, please contact the school and arrangements can be made to support families in need.
In the coming week, our teachers will be implementing a reward system for students wearing full school uniform. This will include wearing the appropriate school socks, which should be white or grey, as well as black shoes.
We want our school community looking fabulous, and united as a team, so we thank our students and parents/carers for their support with wearing school uniform.
DANCE FESTIVAL
In Week 6, 22 Year 6 students performed over three days at the South Coast Dance Festival. The participating students are to be commended on their performance and effort. Almost two terms of practising paid off and many parents and staff that attended commented on how wonderful they looked and performed. I couldn’t agree more!
Miss Lambert would like to thank all the students that performed and also the parents who supported such a worthy experience for their children. A special thanks to Miss Lambert for the huge commitment she made to the students in ensuring a wonderful experience that they will all remember for many years to come. A big thanks also to Ms Bailey who was the support crew for Miss Lambert and the attending students throughout the performances.
RECONCILIATION WEEK ACTIVITIES
Last Tuesday 1 June 2021 we held our very own Reconciliation Week activity day. During the day, students participated in a range of school-wide activities, within and beyond their class, as they reflected on the theme for this year – “More than a word. Reconciliation takes action.”
The highlight was without a doubt the “Great Woonona Walk”, where students walked around the school, reading information and answering questions about reconciliation that were on posters throughout our grounds. The playground was buzzing all day with happy and engaged students, learning about the history of our country. Each student concluded the day by making a pledge for what they can do about reconciliation, with some powerful thoughts being shared by all students K-6.
The feedback from the day has been very positive, and I would like to thank the organising committee for bringing together such a successful day.
P&C
Our next P&C meeting will be this Wednesday 9 June, at 6:30pm (that’s tomorrow). The main school gate on Gray Street will be open. The meeting will be held in the school meeting room but will also have a Zoom option, for those parents unable to attend. .The Zoom link and agenda have been sent out and are also attached to this newsletter below. We hope to see you there!
QUEEN’S BIRTHDAY LONG WEEKEND
Next Monday 14 June is the Queen’s Birthday Long Weekend. There will be no school on this day as it is a Public Holiday. We wish all our students, their families and staff an enjoyable extra long weekend.
SEMESTER 1 REPORTS
On Tuesday of Week 10, your child’s Semester 1 report will be sent home. For staff this is a culmination of months of work and I congratulate them on their professional approach in ensuring the reports were completed in a timely manner. I feel very confident that teachers have taken great care to provide professional judgements on students and their achievement.
As is traditionally the case, there will only be interviews at the request of parents, as interviews were conducted at the conclusion of Term 1. If you would like to discuss your child’s report further, please contact the classroom teacher to organise a mutually convenient time to meet.
SAFE PEOPLE, SAFE PLACES
From time to time, it is important to reinforce with children the correct action to take if they are placed in a situation where they feel unsafe. Below are some key messages for children to be aware of in ensuring their safety. I would encourage parents to reinforce the ‘Safe People, Safe Places’ messages with their children, including:
- Make sure your parents or another adult you know, knows where you are at all times.
- Always walk straight home or to the place you are walking to. Walk near busier roads and streets, or use paths where there are lots of other people.
- Know where safe places are – a shop, service station, police station, library or school. If you are ever frightened, you should go to one of these places and ask them to call the police.
- Learn about safe adults you can look for and talk to if you need help – police officers, teachers at school, adults you know and trust.
- Don’t talk to people you don’t know and never get into a car with someone you don’t know. If a car stops on the side of the road and you don’t know the person inside, do not stop.
- If you are scared and can use a phone, call 000 and tell them you are scared.
- If someone tries to grab you, yell out, ‘Go away, I don’t know you’. This lets other people know you have been approached by someone you don’t know.
KINDER 2022
Our school has already had a number of parents wishing to enrol their child for Kindergarten 2022. This is great news! If you are planning on enrolling your child next year, or know of someone who is thinking about it, that lives in our school drawing area, please come to the office and collect an enrolment form or complete the enrolment online by visiting our school website for more information.

Hoodies for the Homeless
With the colder winter months setting in, it is when our most vulnerable community members feel the effects. All community members of Woonona Public School are invited to donate any unwanted/unloved hoodies or jumpers to support the ‘Hoodies for the Homeless’ initiative run by local radio station Wave FM. We are NOT asking for money, just for any unloved hoodies or jumpers you no longer want or need. This can include adult, children and teenager hoodies.
The SRC students will begin collecting the hoodies from classrooms and will do so until Thursday 10 June. All items collected will be delivered to Wave FM on Friday 11 June.
Many thanks for supporting this worthwhile cause. If you have any questions, please don’t hesitate to contact the school on 42 84 4316.

Library News
As part of the school’s NAIDOC celebrations, we will be hosting Woonona Public School’s Great Book Swap to raise money for the Indigenous Literacy Foundation. The Indigenous Literacy Foundation will use all funds raised to purchase culturally appropriate reading resources for remote Indigenous communities.
This will take place in
Week 10 - Tuesday 22 June
In Weeks 8 and 9 we are encouraging students to bring in one (1) good quality book from home to donate to the swap. A donation tub will be located in the Library foyer for students to bring in their donation.
In Week 10, Tuesday 22 June, students in class groups will be able to view books and purchase one for a GOLD COIN DONATION. There will also be available some ex-Library books so children may like to bring in an extra coin to select another book once all classes have had a turn.
I hope all students will get involved in this event and help support such a worthy organisation that is making a difference in remote Indigenous communities.
If you would like to make an additional donation to our school book swap you can find the details and the school’s Great Book Swap donation page by clicking the link below.

Book Club
Issue 4 of the Scholastic Book Club orders are due by Monday 14 June. Orders can be placed online using the LOOP OR by sending completed order forms to the office by Monday 14 June. Please keep in mind that order forms will not be accepted in the office next week as there will be no school on Monday 14 June.
Library Loans
Overdue notices are being sent out this week. Please take the time to help your child locate and return their books this week. If you received an overdue loan notice and the book is lost, please let us know so it can be wiped from our system. Notices will also list the book price which parents can pay to the office for purchase of a replacement copy. If you receive an overdue notice and the book has already been paid for previously or has already been returned, please send the slip back in with this noted down. Our Library computer system will automatically create notices for any overdue books from this year. Thank you to those students who have already returned books or notified me about lost books.
Thank you for your cooperation with this matter.
Happy Reading!

Soccer News
Both our State Knock Out teams have rolled on to the quarter finals of the South Coast portion of the tournament with comprehensive victories.
The boys took to Ocean Park first and completely dismantled their opposition, Fairy Meadow, with great passing and movement throughout. An amazing early strike by Jacob sent us into the lead, with Ashton showing great touch and Quinn excellent persistence to stretch the lead. The undoubted highlight of the game was a whipped Harvey free kick from 30 yards, which Henry flicked in to the top corner at the far post. The defense also put in a tremendous shift as they kept the oppositions dangerous forwards extremely quiet and maintained another clean sheet in the 4-0 win. Sublime stuff boys.
The Girls team also showed their class as they proved way to good for Balgownie. Aleah opened the scoring with a glorious strike from outside the penalty area, while Courtney showed great courage and skill to bag a hat trick while carrying an injury into the game. Once again all the players worked hard and it was a real team effort that led to a 5-1 victory. Well done ladies!
The time, location and opposition, for the next round, will be communicated as soon as it comes to hand.
We would like to wish our two representatives at the NSW PSSA Soccer Championships, Zac and Courtney, good luck as they represent South Coast at this upcoming event. It is an amazing accomplishment to represent the South Coast region, particularly in a very popular sport like soccer. Both students have been training hard in the lead up to their tournaments, where they will come up against the best players in NSW. We will keep the school community up to date as the girls' tournament takes place next week and the boys' tournament in early Term 3. Good luck Zac and Courtney!
