A Message from the Principal
Dear Families,
This week has FLOWN by! We know that many students and families are being impacted by the ongoing surge in COVID cases. It is such a hard time, and we are appreciative to our families and staff for your ongoing support and understanding.
In the midst of many challenges, I wanted to share an uplifting snapshot from school. Just before break, our student council asked students to fill out a slip of paper asking “What Brings You Joy?” The responses to these questions now fill our galleria. Each day when I walk by, I try to focus and read just one more answer from our students about what they are joyful about these days. From family members to pets to teachers to toys to experiences and more, our Cheetahs are remembering so many positive things in their lives!
I hope that you can find joy in your life during this long weekend.
Warmly,
Ana
From our Chain Lake Health Room:
Just a few reminders related to our COVID protocols.
Please DO NOT send your child to school if they have any symptoms that could be related to COVID-19, even if you think they just have a cold. Without the daily attestations, we are relying on you to assess your child’s health status and appropriateness for school. Thank you for your help in preventing the spread of COVID-19.
If your child, or anyone in your household, tests positive for COVID-19, please notify the health room, principal, or front office staff right away. Please know in advance that your child(ren) will need to remain at home.
If your child needs to quarantine because he/she was found to be a close contact of someone who tested positive, please work with your classroom teacher or the office to have a chromebook sent home or to pick up a chromebook at school. Please call the office from outside and we will deliver a chromebook to your car if necessary.
HIPAA laws protect confidential health information, including COVID-19 status. Because of this, we are unable to share the identity of anyone in our community who tests positive. Thank you for understanding.
Please feel free to reach out if you have any questions. The phone number in the health room is 360-804-3132 and the best email address is corriem@monroe.wednet.edu.

Student Vaccination
If a child is fully vaccinated and is identified as a close contact, they are able to stay at school without testing or quarantine, assuming they continue to display no symptoms. If a vaccinated child does display symptoms of Covid-19, we must then continue to follow the illness guidelines for the Snohomish Health District.
If you would like us to know your child's vaccination dates, please feel free to email or call the office.
Renewal of the School Program & Operations Levy
Monroe School District will be asking voters to renew the expiring School Program & Operations (SP&O) Levy this February. The renewal of the SP&O levy would not be a new tax; it would be a replacement of an expiring levy that would continue to bridge the gap between what the state funds as basic education and the cost of all the programs, services, and essential staff the Monroe School District provides for its students.
A renewal of the four-year SP&O levy would continue to fund many critical day-to-day operations, programs and services not fully funded by the state, including:
Athletics and extracurricular activities, such as band, choir and drama
Additional teachers to keep class sizes low
School safety and security
Student transportation
Special education programs
Student support programs
Professional learning for staff
Operations and building maintenance costs
Supplies and materials
Competitive salaries and benefits beyond what the state funds
Additional staff, such as nurses and mental health counselors
Daily Gym Sock.......
This week in P.E. We will be playing Fake-N-Take, Color code, King of the Deck Rings, and some cardiorespiratory activities.. Please remember to wear comfortable clothes and tennis shoes.

Digital Learning
Happy New Year! For this rotation of Digital Learning in Kindergarten and Grade 1 will be introduced to algorithms. They will help create an algorithm for making a peanut butter and jelly sandwich in an interactive (and potentially messy) activity. They will then have additional practice in writing algorithms in their groups.
In grades 2-5 we will be working on research strategies by integrating Brittanica, an online encyclopaedia ideal for research that is available on the MSD site under student tools. They will work with a partner to conduct research on a relevant grade-level topic and fill out an outline using Google Docs.
Keep Calm and Code On!

Note from the library.......
This week in the library we are reading a fun book called “Don’t Call me Bear” written and illustrated by Aaron Blabey. The students are loving the fun humour that comes with this book about a very disgruntled Koala who is upset about everyone calling him a bear.
Last week for some reason the overdue notices email did not work right, so I will be trying to send that out again this coming Friday. If you could please help your student find any missing books they have sitting around at home and have them bring them back to school I would greatly appreciate the help.
Happy Reading!
