BROOKDALE BOBCAT PRINTS
October 14, 2019
Principal Message
Thank you families for taking the time to honor and support your children by attending their student-led conferences! Family involvement in setting goals for the school year is an important component to student success! I also want to thank families for taking time to complete the school survey! The feedback provided through the survey will help us determine how we can better support our students and their families!
Who doesn’t like Pizza??? Each month students who do not receive an office referral for the month will be entered into a drawing to have Pizza with the Principal! We will draw a name from each grade level for this special honor. Congratulations to the following students’ whose names were drawn for the month of September: William Brown, Frankie Glymph, Zae'vion Franklin, Elise Goodright, Ionella Cassir, and Tabitha Twiggs. They enjoyed their pizza with the principal on Friday, October 11th.
Please join me on Friday, November 1 at 9:00am for Coffee with the Principal. I will be sharing Brookdale’s SIP (School Improvement Plan) goals and introducing Kari Ferguson, our assistant principal.
What are you doing at 10:17 a.m. on 10.17.19? We’ll be participating in the Great Washington Shake-Out – a statewide earthquake drill. Students will practice drop, cover, and hold. For more information regarding the activity go to shakeout.org.
WE APPRECIATE YOU!
FOOD SERVICES STAFF APPRECIATION WEEK! – I’m not sure where we’d be without the hard work of Ms. Kondratyuk and Ms. Pearce. They work hard every day to make sure that Brookdale students have a healthy breakfast, lunch, and snack each and every day. These two wonderful ladies serve hundreds of meals each week, taking care to make sure that students have everything they need to be nourished so they can do their best work in the classroom. We thank our kitchen staff for their important work at Brookdale.
BE KIND TO OUR BUS DRIVERS – Next week is Bus Driver Appreciation Week! Our bus drivers safely and faithfully transport hundreds of students to and from school each day. Anyone who has driven a car full of children can appreciate how challenging it is to drive a school bus packed with energetic students. Please join us in thanking our bus drivers this week for all of their hard work. We also want to thank the wonderful staff in the Transportation Dept. for working so hard to make sure students get to and from school in a safe, timely manner.
2:00 Early dismissal schedule for October 16, 23, and 30.
Goodies with Grown-ups
Calling all Brookdale families! We would love to have you join us for some special time on Friday, October 25th from 8:15 – 8:40 a.m. This event is for Brookdale kids and an important grown-up in their lives. Meet us in the multi-purpose room for a light breakfast treat, coffee and milk!
HELP THE BROOKDALE GARDEN GET A NEW HOME!
As you all know we will be getting a new school in the next few years and we will be demolishing the old building. Our hope is that instead of demolishing our Community Garden we can re-home parts of the garden to families in our community. Come join us Saturday, October 26th from 10-12 to take home a part of the garden. You will need to bring a pot to carry the plant home in, but we will provide the rest. It will be on a first come first serve basis. We will have a larger variety of plants to take home including different herbs, raspberry and strawberry plants. We hope to see you there!

Reminders
NO CELL PHONES PLEASE – Please review the Family Resource Handbook regarding cell phones at Brookdale. They SHOULD NOT be seen or heard on school property during school hours. When phones go off during class it causes an interruption of learning. We are NOT responsible if the cell phone is lost, broken or stolen at school. Thank you for your understanding and support with this matter.
SCHEDULE CHANGES - The end of the day at Brookdale is very hectic. If you forgot to send a note in the morning (which is preferred) and need to call the school with a change to your child’s schedule, please do so before 3:00 p.m. After 3:00 the office is busy assisting students and parents and will not be able to answer your call or get a message to a student before they leave for the day. All end of the day schedule changes must be made through the office, not with the classroom teacher. Thank you!
IF BROOKDALE’S NUMBER SHOWS UP ON YOUR CALLER ID
If you ever get a call from Brookdale, please listen to the voicemail (it might take a few minutes to come through) we leave before calling the school. Regardless of who called, the main office number will show up on the caller ID. The office gets many calls saying “the school called” but has no idea who the caller was. All staff members will leave a detailed message on your voicemail if they call your home or need a call back from the parent.
