The Engaged Connector

Great Resources & Info for Family Engagement Coordinators

Important Information About 1:1 Meetings!

Since returning from break I've been able to visit with a handful of you one-on-one and use the the Focal Rubric to evaluate the success of the FEC role at your schools. The outcome of these meetings has been positive discussion about direction and focus as well as an opportunity to reflectively evaluate strategies and the well-roundedness of engagement programming. These calls are important. If you have cancelled or missed a meeting, I will always want reschedule with you right away. If you do NOT have a 1:1 scheduled with me for January, please contact me today!

From this point on, please remember to complete the Rubric in advance of your 1:1 calls and email it to me so that we are able to look at it together. It is important to read the whole document before you complete it so that you fully understand what each segment refers to.

I look forward to talking with each of you soon!

Strategies Shared During Recent PLC for Late On-Boarding

During our recent PLC, several of you shared strategies for Late Start On-Boarding. Don't forget to check out all the resources from that meeting and the great tools, ideas and strategies shared then.

One Note

Many of you are pretty excited about using One Note for a myriad of purposes, from tracking families and students to sharing content with colleagues. Many have also requested training on this great tool. A good place to start is with Microsoft's Tutorials on OneNote. These are short, segmented so that you can watch only the parts that you need, and on-demand. Enjoy!

FEC Sharing Matters!

One of the most rewarding things to me is witnessing the quantity of generous sharing that occurs during PLCs. FECs, by nature it seems, want to communicate, discuss and share ideas and methods. I also enjoy receiving your emails with pictures, recordings and verbatims from families. I'd like to share some great items that have come into my mailbox in recent weeks.

From Jennifer Tracewell at ORVA

Katy Hart, Math and Science teacher at ORVA, presented an excellent workshop for our Learning Coaches and staff on the topic of Growth Mindset. Katy encouraged us all to change from a fixed mindset to a growth mindset, where you really can grow your brain’s capacity to learn and solve problems!

Below is the link to the recording from the session.

From Denise Roberts at WAVA

Check out the SWAY that Denise has put together to share things that have happened at WAVA!

Social Media: You Need to Think About It

The years when the Family Support Team was ensconced in the Marketing Dept were beneficial to us in many ways. I can say that I learned a great deal about marketing and social media. I look at things differently, watch analytics differently, and actually enjoy it more. As I find resources I feel are valuable to you, I'll continue to update the OneDrive FEC Resources in addition to posting some things here initially. Today I found one more great resource for you. 2016 Social Media Survival Guide by Socialtyze has some thoughts and ideas in it that can refresh your view on ANY media for your families, whether FB, Twitter or even newsletters. Take the time. You deserve it. So do your families. It could make your media content and timing more effective, and, I know, that more effective messaging matters to you.

TED Talk of the Week

The Power of Believing That You Can Improve in 10 minutes That You Need to Spare to Watch This!

Jasmine FB'd this video to me a few weeks back saying, "This is a great visual for FAST :) . We overcome the obstacles our students need help with through the combined efforts of the student, LC, FAST, and academic team."

The teamwork here is spectacular. But I'm sure that it was practice and cooperation that created this seemingly effortless success. Same with all of us, right? Keep at it! We'll get there.
Sometimes you need friends to get over an obstacle
