Curriculum Night

Reading Block
We have a 90 minute reading block. Within that block we focus on:
- Decoding and encoding using the Wilson reading program
- Comprehension using Geodes decodable books
- High frequency words using the Fry Sight word list
- Fluency with Wilson passages
- Phonics using Heggerty.
Writers Workshop
During the writing block we use the Lucy Calkins writing curriculum that is modified to meet students needs. We use organizers from the Landmark School to help students create single to multi paragraph stories/essays. Units of study are:
- Narrative
- Realistic Fiction
- Literary Essays
- Poetry
- Journalism
Math Workshop
During the math block we use the Eureka Math curriculum modified to become accessible for all students. Students use manipulatives, visuals, a math word wall, and reference sheets to support their understanding. Units of study are:
- Geometry
- Place Value
- Addition and subtraction with and without regrouping
- Multiplication fand division
- Word Problems
- Metric Conversions
- Fractions
Science and Social Studies
Units of study include:
- Weathering and erosion
- Energy
- Plants & animals
- Technology & engineering
- Geography
- Ancient Civilizations in North America
- European Explorers
- The expansion of the United States
Social Emotional Learning
- Each month there is a character trait. September is Responsibility
- Recite core values each morning: Hemenway Tigers respect ourselves, Hemenway Tigers respect others, Hemenway Tigers respect our school, Hemenway Tigers perservere!
- PBIS
- Zones of Regulation (red, yellow, blue, green zones)
- PAWS for good deeds, following the 5 core rules
