Each year, ECSAAG promotes a Parent Education Directory that has offerings geared for parents of children any age -- infants to teens. If you are feeling overwhelmed by your toddler's emotions, eager to learn about healthy discipline strategies for your elementary-aged kids, worried about changes in your teen's behavior or feeling alone trying to make it as a teen parent, the directory has courses to meet your your needs and more. Most parents and caregivers report being glad they took the time to gain skills, knowledge and support. Empowered parents are powerful allies in substance abuse prevention! Find a downloadable copy of the many varied Parent Education offerings in the 2015 Winter/Spring Directory on the Eaton RESA website.

2015 Mental Health Resources
Michigan has one of the highest prevalences of behavioral health concerns in America (ranking 48th out of 51 states), according to Mental Health America (MHA), a 100 year-old non-profit dedicated to improving American's mental health. Despite this high prevalence, the good news is that Michigan fairs much better in its ranking for access to care (23rd out of 51 states). Each year ECSAAG supports a Mental Health Directory, helping all residents in the tri-county area access affordable mental health services. Printed copies are available on request by calling Laurie Marshall at 517-541-8711. An online version of the directory will be available on the ECSAAG facebook page as well. https://www.facebook.com/pages/Eaton-County-Substance-Advisory-Group-ECSAAG/260532137063?ref=bookmarks
Risk Assessment & Motivational Interviewing Training a Success!
Our Regional Training Center had an overwhelmingly positive response to the two-day Risk Assessment and Motivational Interviewing Training for Adolescents in December. About 50 attendees participated and gained valuable new skills for working with adolescents in schools, counseling centers, community programs and health centers. Motivational interviewing is a directive, client-centered counseling style for eliciting behavior change by helping clients to explore and resolve ambivilence. It can also be used in non-counseling situations. The following clip gives a taste of how motivational interviewing can bulid rapport with individuals and help them make the changes they are ready to make.

Youth Substance Abuse Data Trends
Good News! The Michigan Profile for Healthy Youth, a survey administered every two years shows that "Past 30 Day use of Alcohol" has fallen in Eaton County middle and high schoolers from 2008 to 2014. However, we do notice a slight increase from 2012 to 2014 in 30 day use among 7th and 9th graders. Binge Drinking (not shown in graph) has also fallen substantially in 9th graders and 11th graders. Binge drinking is defined in this survey as an occasion in the past month where the student has had 5 or more drinks. In other substance use categories queried on the survey, results show that cigarette use has fallen from 2008 to 2014 among 7th, 9th and 11th graders. This is more good news to celebrate. Prescription drug abuse (Ritalin, Xanax, Adderal) has stayed fairly constant over the past six years. This remains an area we need to keep a close watch on given statewide trends with prescription drug overdoses and deaths among adults. A full report of Youth Data Trends is available upon request.
