Year 6 Newsletter
Term 1 - 13th October, 2017
Welcome to Year 6!
PSE Connections within our unit of inquiry:
Year 6 Leadership Roles
Applications, presentations and elections for our Year 6 student leadership positions have begun! Applications for our House Captain positions have been shortlisted and displayed for voters to read and choose which candidate they would like to represent their house. Shortlisted House Captains will be presenting to their Y5 and 6 peers at House assemblies on Monday and elections will be held next Thursday 31st August.
As Y6 leaders we will consider:
How an effective group can accomplish more than a set of individuals; how communities and societies have their own norms, rules and regulations; and how people can extend and challenge their current understandings by engaging with the ideas and perspectives of others.
Unit of Inquiry;
Central Idea: Understanding of scientific knowledge is constantly evolving and has an impact on people's lives.
Lines of Inquiry:
How does matter change state (causation)
How are physical and chemical changes applied in our lives (connection)
What are the protocols associated with scientific research (responsibility)
This is a practical inquiry unit delving into scientific and technological advances and the impact they have on society and the environment. Children will have the opportunity to predict, observe, analyse and explore a range of scientific concepts. We will culminate this unit by hosting a mini Science Fair for our Year 5 friends.
Coming up: Muffin in a Mug!
We are currently looking at procedural writing and are familiarizing ourselves with the very important instructions on 'How to trap a Stone Giant.' It is currently on the loose and was last sighted on Old Peak Road.
Coming up: Explanations - Can use explanations to help us form scientific conclusions?
We have moved onto work involving the 4 operations and have revised a number of mental addition and subtraction strategies. Recently we have consolidated work on prime numbers and factors. Please ask your child to give you their best definition on these!
Coming up: Multiplication and Division
Scholastic Reading Club Catalogues
This week your child will have brought home some brochures for you to browse and order books from if you wish. Scholastic sell a variety of books for all ages and are a supplier of books for our library. All completed orders must be returned to school along with a cheque for the total amount written out to Scholastic Hong Kong Limited. Order forms can be handed in to the office or to the class teacher no later than Monday 4th September. We would also like to emphasise that any orders you place will generate Scholastic Reading Club credits for Kennedy School. Once we receive all the ordered books, we will deliver them to your child's classroom for your child to take home. If you have any queries in regards to this, please don't hesitate to email firstname.lastname@example.org.
Secondary transfer applications for year 7 can be completed on the Gateway from Monday 4 September to Friday 15 September 2017. If you wish your child to attend an ESF secondary school you must complete the application on Gateway within the given dates.
Allocation for secondary school will be determined by your residential zone at the start of Year 6. For further details, parents should refer to the information available on the ESF website at http://www.esf.edu.hk/year7-key-dates/ for key dates and http://www.esf.edu.hk/esf-zones/ for school zones.
All newly joined Y6 are guaranteed a Year 7 place but not necessarily for the school of zone.
