The Georgia Department of Education: Testing Waiver 2020-2021 (Online Survey)

The Georgia Department of Education announced today an online survey to get the public’s feedback on a waiver of the high-stakes testing requirement in the Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA) for the 2020-2021 school year. ESSA requires that the public and any interested school districts have an opportunity to comment and provide input on all waiver requests.

State School Superintendent Richard Woods and the Georgia Department of Education are urging anyone interested in the future of Georgia’s public education system to complete the survey.

“For all those invested in Georgia’s education system – whether you’re a parent, a student, an educator, or a community member, I strongly encourage you to offer your feedback as we seek a waiver from high-stakes testing for the 2020-2021 school year,” Superintendent Woods said. “Since the beginning of the COVID-19 crisis, we have urged common sense regarding compliance in Georgia’s public schools, and a focus before anything else on the health, safety, and well-being of students, families, and school staff. Given the ongoing challenges posed by the pandemic and the resulting state budget reductions, it would be counterproductive to continue with high-stakes testing for the 2020-2021 school year. In anticipation of a return to in-person instruction this fall, we believe schools’ focus should be on remediation, growth, and the safety of students. Every dollar spent on high-stakes testing would be a dollar taken away from the classroom.”

The online survey can be found at the following link through Friday, July 10 at 11:59 pm: http://gadoe.org/ESSASurvey

A Special Message from Principal Miley: To 8th Grade Scholars

Dear 8th Grade Jaguars,

Let me first start by saying that I am so very proud of what you have accomplished this year! Joining the Sandtown team has truly brought me pleasure, and a significant part of this pleasure comes from the leadership and maturity shown by our 8th grade scholars. You have stepped up in many ways and signified what it truly means to be a Jaguar. You did not let past definitions or perceptions define who you were; you shed the "middle syndrome" that often is associated with 7th grade rather quickly and, you transformed into leaders right before my eyes.

Many of you I have known as elementary scholars, and it has been such a pleasure to witness your transformation, thus far. It is enlightening and bittersweet, at the same time. Others, we formed a unique bond this year, and we were deepening our rapport. What I can attest to from my engagement and observation is that growing up is no easier today than it was yesterday, or decades prior. It’s a challenge like any other, and you are faced with so many obstacles. You’ve met these challenges and obstacles with perseverance and character. So believe me when I say you are ready and fully prepared for the next step, high school.

The pandemic (COVID-19) has not changed the values embedded within you. It has not removed your desire and dedication to upholding JAG SWAG. What COVID-19 has done is challenged you to think beyond today and prepare for tomorrow. Over the next two months, I challenge you to do just that, seek to prepare for the unknown by always bringing the best that you have to offer to the table.

You are smart, talented, gifted and undeniably unique; you are a Jaguar. You were chosen to lead this charge! I am so proud of you, the future class of 2024 and, I wish you the most success as you venture into uncharted territory.

I love you all and I will miss you. Congratulations!

Your biggest fan,

Principal Miley
