Collaboration & Co-teaching
A District 68 Internal University Course
Course Description
Andrea Honigsfeld and Maria Dove highlight the importance of a whole-school approach to the teaching of ELLs where the collective expertise of teachers is harnessed through collaboration and co-teaching. This approach ensures that ELL students are not isolated from their peers and all teachers gain access to instructional strategies that promote student engagement and accelerated academic development.
This course, run as a book study, is open to all district staff who are interested in learning more about collaboration and co-teaching between general education teachers and ESL specialists to better serve the needs of ELLs.
Course Expectations
The course will meet every other week for a ten week period (5 sessions).
Members will be required to read 2 chapters and be prepared to discuss at every meeting. In addition to reading assigned chapters and participating in the five face-to-face sessions, participants will write a short blog after each chapter indicating “aha” moments (using Read, Reflect, Rethink, Re-use model).
Face-to-face meetings will last one hour from 3:45-4:45 pm on the assigned nights.
Discussion questions will be posted prior to our face-to-face meetings.
Upon completion of the book study, participants will write an Action Plan to share with building principals of how they will incorporate what has been learned from the book during the upcoming school year.
