4 Tips to help your child attend school regularly:
- Set a regular bedtime and morning routine.
- Develop backup plans for getting to school if something comes up. Call on a family member, a neighbor, or another parent.
- If your child seems anxious about going to school, talk to teachers, school counselors, and other parents for advice on how to make your child feel comfortable and excited about learning.
- If your child must stay home due to illness, ask the teacher for resources and ideas to continue learning at home.
Counselor's Corner
Welcome or welcome back, Sayeik: Gastineau families! It has truly been a joy to be back in the building with your children, meeting new faces and celebrating the return of familiar ones! Truly, each trip down the hall for me is joyful and I hope it is for you as well!
As the School Counselor, I get to teach a social-emotional learning (SEL) lesson to each class each week - this allows me to know each child in our school! These lessons include such topics as how to be a good friend, what to do with big feelings, how our brains and bodies work (especially when we have BIG emotions), safety, and other topics. If your child comes home and announces they went to see the counselor today, it was most likely because their class came to their weekly lesson in my room! I also meet with small groups and individuals as needed. This is usually in response to friendship conflicts or other struggles that may arise throughout the day. Please feel free to reach out at any time with questions or concerns.
Parenting is certainly the hardest job in the world and the owner’s manual seems to be missing sometimes! Many years ago I took a course that gave me a helpful lens for understanding confusing and challenging behaviors; this new lens helped me develop new strategies for responding to these behaviors. This has been so valuable that I try to lead a parent group each fall to share this learning.
I am planning to offer Circle of Security for parents this fall. It is a free 8-session (1.5 - 2 hours each) series, beginning in October. We will find a time that works for those interested in joining. Grounded in Attachment Theory, COSP supports parents and caregivers in strengthening their relationship with children and developing a healthy bond that can become the model for future healthy relationships. Here is a Short Video about COS Parenting.
Please reach out if you are interested in joining this next series.
Thank you for sharing your child with us!
Kindly,
Deb (aka Ms. Spencer)
