Administrative Boundary Adjustment in Southwestern part of BSD
The Beaverton School Board will consider several administrative boundary adjustments in the southwestern portion of the District during the June 12, 2017 Board Meeting. Board Policy JC provides guidance for the review of attendance boundaries when fewer than three school attendance boundaries will be impacted.
1) In Dec. 2015, the Beaverton School Board adopted a resolution to approve the transfer of 240 acres of land in the South Cooper Mountain area from Hillsboro School District to Beaverton School District. The area will be transferred to Beaverton School District effective July 1, 2017. The area is sparsely populated and there are no current BSD students. It is expected that residential development will take place over the next 3-5 years. The District needs to establish attendance areas for this area. Students who move to the area after the date of the boundary adoption will attend Hazeldale ES and Conestoga MS. This area is already assigned to Mountainside High School.
2) The second proposed boundary adjustment affects South Cooper Mountain developments which would be reassigned from Nancy Ryles Elementary School to the Hazeldale Elementary School attendance area effective Sept. 2017. The recommendation is to transfer a portion of the Nancy Ryles attendance boundary, bounded generally by SW Kemmer Road, SW 175th Avenue and the District boundary, to the Hazeldale attendance boundary. Students currently residing in this area will be offered the opportunity to remain at Nancy Ryles ES through 5th grade, or to enroll at Hazeldale ES. Students who move to the area after the date of the boundary adoption will attend Hazeldale Elementary School.
3) The third proposed boundary adjustment affects Kemmer area developments which would be reassigned from Nancy Ryles Elementary School to the Cooper Mt. Elementary School attendance area effective Sept. 2017. The recommendation is to transfer a portion of the Nancy Ryles attendance boundary, bounded by SW 175th, SW 170th Avenues and SW Kemmer and SW Weir Roads, to the Cooper Mt. ES attendance boundary. Students currently residing in this area will be offered the opportunity to remain at Nancy Ryles ES through 5th grade, or to enroll at Cooper Mt. ES. Students who move to the area after the date of the boundary adoption will attend Cooper Mt. Elementary School.
4) The fourth proposed boundary adjustment addresses a new 100 multi-family unit apartment complex that is set to begin construction in the coming months. Due to the project's parcel configuration and location, the apartment buildings will be split between Scholls Heights and Nancy Ryles elementary schools. The District seeks to minimize such splits to support neighborhood unity and minimize transportation costs. The recommendation is to assign this area to the Nancy Ryles Elementary School attendance area. Bus transportation will be provided.

Have a safe and restful summer!
Mountainside High School 10th Grade Fly Up
Nearly 400 freshmen from surrounding high schools ascended on the new Mountainside High School football stadium for a 10th Grade “Fly Up” on Wednesday.
All of the District’s high schools offered a “Fly Up” day for the class of 2020 who will be attending a new high school next year due to boundary changes. Students at Mountainside met with the Planning Team, had the opportunity to get to know each other through bonding activities, walk the track and field and sign a “Thank You” banner for the contractors and architects.
Prevent the “Summer Slide”
Did you know that kids could lose up to three months of academic progress over the summer? This is called the “summer slide.” Summer slide is when students forget some of what they have learned or slip out of practice of reading during the summer months.
Here are three tips from Scholastic to prevent the summer slide:
- Read at least six books during the summer
- Read something every day
- Keep reading aloud
The Beaverton School District has put together a list of great local summer reading programs to help students prevent “summer slide.”
Other great resources include:
- Summer School & Credit Recovery at District comprehensive high schools: (Aloha, Beaverton, Southridge, Sunset, Westview)
- ACMA Summer Academy 2016

- Summer Day Camps at the Oregon Zoo

WE Expect Excellence: Emergency Coordinator – Ashley McConnell Vander Jagt
Inspired by the devastation of Hurricane Katrina, dance and film major Ashley McConnell Vander Jagt dropped everything and took a Spring Break trip to New Orleans, Louisiana to volunteer with Habitat for Humanity's Camp Hope. There, Ashley helped with the removal of health and safety hazards in residential properties throughout St. Bernard Parish (gutting houses i.e. removing rotting furniture, drywall, kitchen appliances that held biohazards) at no cost to their owners.
"I saw the destruction firsthand, which sort of changed my perspective on things. My career goals changed too. After I left the spring break trip I bought a one-way ticket to return to New Orleans for the whole summer. It was such a life-changing experience for me that my parents were worried that I wouldn't come back home to finish my last year of college," says Ashley.
Ashley did return to Marymount Manhattan College in New York City and began researching advanced degree programs in public health. She was admitted to the Tulane School of Public Health in the Environmental Health and Disaster Management Program where she received her Master's in Public Health. "While I was in New Orleans, I was able to get amazing experience in the Emergency Management field," says Ashley. "It is kind of a hard field to get into if you are not coming from a law enforcement, fire, or military background. I continued to volunteer, I had internships, and doors just sort of opened up for me."
The featured Pillar Stories are shared on the District’s main webpage in a rotating slide show. Each Pillar has a photo with an accompanying story.
