MES Event Calendar
From the Principal
I don't know if it's just me but this year seems to be flying by faster than most. My favorite memories from the school year so far have to be from Grandparents Week. We had over 600 visitors for lunch over the week and it was such a great time visiting and hearing some interesting stories. Hearing these stories and talking about our students at MES it really got me thinking about what we really want for all of our students here. MES is filled with 596 students with such amazing gifts. All of our students have great potential to make an enormous impact on this world and to make it a better place. My hope is that every single day we are working together to create the best environment for our students to thrive and build on their unique gifts and to become the best version of themselves.
Assistant Principal
Happy Fall Bearcats!
The school year is in full swing and our Bearcats are doing and learning about some great things! Please remember that the school day starts at 8:15 and students are dismissed at 3:40 each day. At 8:15 each morning the car rider drop off will be blocked and all students coming to school after 8:15 will need to be dropped off at the front entrance of the building. Being to school on time each day is very beneficial to your child and helps him/her have a great day! If your child will need to eat breakfast, please have him/her at school prior to 8:15 so there is time to get through the serving line and eat before the day of learning begins. Also all students arriving after 8:15 will need to have an adult walk them into the building.
The district has set a goal for our daily attendance to be at 95%. We met our goal for 2 weeks in September and the other weeks we were very close. Thank you for getting your student/s to school each day and helping them to understand the importance of attending school regularly. Each student that reaches our attendance goal of 2 or less absences per grading period will be able to attend our attendance party at the end of each grading period. Our first attendance party will be a popsicle with the principal and will be held in the month of October.
Please remember that this year MISD will have a fall break. Students will be out of school on October 7th, October 10th, & October 11th. I hope you enjoy this extra time with your family!
Counselor's Corner
Hi Bearcat Family!
What a busy, yet wonderful start we have had here at M.E.S.! We are having so much fun learning character traits through skits and active physical education games as my guidance lessons are taking place in P.E. this year! Please take the time to read my “Counselor’s Connection”, which will be sent out via email each month. Within the “Counselor’s Connection”, you will receive family resources of how you may incorporate the character trait of the month into your home as we work on bridging home and school.
Take Note - Our October character trait is RESPECT!
Thank you to everyone who completed the School Counseling Needs Assessment Survey. Your feedback is invaluable! I have compiled all the data and selected the top six areas, which I will focus on this year for small groups. Small groups are an important part of a successful Developmental and Guidance Counseling Program (DGP). A small group meets once a week, for 30 minutes, for a total of six weeks, during lunch or recess. The first meeting is an introduction into the group and establishes the norms and protocols for the group. Sessions two through five are the actual lessons on the topic, group work, and they will have homework to complete and turn in the next week. The last meeting is a “Review/Exit” out of the group. An “Exit” means your child successfully completed our small group and is aware of the specific skills/tools to be successful in that area. If your child was in a particular group once and “Exited”, they should not be in that group again as we have many children to serve. The following groups will take place throughout this school year, as these are our highest needs:
· Executive Functioning Skills
· Interpersonal Skills/Friendship
· Managing Feelings/Self Control
· Problem Solving/Decision Making
· Anxiety/Stress Management
If you are interested in your child being part of one of these groups, please email me your child’s name and homeroom teacher. My first groups will start October 12th! I am excited to start working with these children to help them grow in these high need areas!
Blessings,
Mrs. Skrehot
Nurse's News
If you have received a letter stating that your child is missing immunizations please get those done ASAP. State law requires all children to be up to date with their immunizations for school attendance.
Flu/cold season is now beginning with very similar symptoms as the Covid-19 virus. Below is a chart describing the various symptoms of different illnesses. As you can see, it is quite difficult if not impossible to tell the differences in the school setting. If you have any questions or concerns in regards to COVID-19 or the new protocol please do not hesitate to call or email me.

Art
Fifth grade Rodeo Art Club has gotten underway and I'm so proud of their hard work! The passion, skill, heart, and drive in this group of students is second to none! They have brainstormed ideas of western themed art, researched elements of art and principles of design to hone in on, and begun their practice sketches! Their final masterpiece will go head-to-head against one another, and then ten carefully chosen pieces from MISD will travel to the Houston Livestock Show & Rodeo to compete with other students across the state! Their pieces will be judged on originality, creativity, skill, and excellence in 2D drawing. We are so proud of their efforts and participation in this grand event!!
Sincerely,
Miss Petty
Music
Autumn is in the air and lots of great things are 'falling' from the music room! We are continuing to work hard to master our music concepts while preparing for some exciting events in October!
- 5th Graders are studying the different types of voices and how they are used in descants,
- parts, and rounds.
- 4th Grade is studying ascending and descending scales, major and minor chords, and
- melodic ostinatos.
- 3rd Graders are continuing to learn to read music through lines and spaces, melodic
- movement, and pentatonic scales.
- 2nd Grade brings beat, tempo, and rhythm altogether while playing, singing, and creating
- ostinatos.
- 1st Grade is focusing on rhythm as they discover the difference between rhythm and beat
- through playing, singing, and movement.
- Kindergarteners are being introduced to rhythm for the first time and learning how to feel
- and play both rhythm and beat in all kinds of music.
- Pre-K begins their exploration of high and low pitch as they learn to use their voices in
- different ways.
All grade levels are travelling back to the '50s as they prepare for our 50th Day of School
50s Sock Hop Celebration. We will be singing and dancing to songs from the 50s while
serving the homeless in our community by collecting one of their most needed
items...socks! So if you have a chance to pick up an extra pair or two of socks the next time
you are shopping, we would sure appreciate it! Kiddos can put them in our "Box Of Sox"
right outside of the Music Room!
MES Bearcat Choir has been working hard rehearsing for their performance of the National Anthem at Minute Maid Park for the Houston Astros! They perform on October 4th at the 7:00pm. Please join us in supporting them by using our link for discounted tickets:
*Our awesome Choir will be a little closer to home for "Voices from Montgomery" a historical tribute at the Montgomery Cemetery on October 22nd and can be seen later that day at First Montgomery Church's Fall Festival. Please come by and support these awesome kiddos!
*We will soon begin our study of instrument families. So....If you happen to have any brass, woodwind, percussion, or string instruments that you would like to rehome, please let me know! They do not need to be in working condition. I appreciate having authentic instruments for the kiddos to see and feel as we study how each instrument works to make beautiful music for the orchestra!
I so appreciate having the opportunity to share music with each one of your kiddos! As always, please let me know if you ever have any questions, suggestions, or concerns. Thank you so much for your support of music and of all the arts in MISD and beyond!
-Love, Mrs. Siple
