WHAT HAS MRS. COLWELL BEEN READING??
Truly Devious by Maureen Johnson (Book 1)
Young Adult Novel
In TRULY DEVIOUS, Stevie is thrilled when she's admitted to Ellingham Academy in Vermont. Not only is Ellingham a prestigious and free boarding school, it's the home of one of the greatest murder mysteries of all time: that of rich entrepreneur Albert Ellingham's wife and daughter in 1936. It seems like a strange reason to be excited, but Stevie studies crime. She reads textbooks and mysteries and listens to true-crime podcasts and hopes one day to be a detective. As Stevie settles into her dorm at Ellingham and meets the other eccentric students there, her one-day dream becomes a reality too soon. A student is found dead. Everyone deems the tragedy an accident, but Stevie's not so sure. (Common Sense Media)
The Vanishing Stair by Maureen Johnson (Book 2)
Young Adult Novel
In THE VANISHING STAIR, Stevie will do anything to get back to Ellingham Academy. Even accept a private jet ride with the abhorrent politician Edward King. King just wants one thing from her: to keep an eye on his son, David, who has been behaving badly since she left. She would have anyway, given her attraction to him. And the fact that David knows so much about Ellie, the student who went missing after Stevie confronted her about her role in another student's death. With all the current chaos swirling around, and classes to catch up on, Stevie somehow still has her eye on solving the Ellingham kidnapping case from the 1930s. She's assigned to work with a professor in Burlington who wants to update her book on the subject. The professor claims to have an exciting new lead in the case, one she's not telling Stevie about. Little does she know that Stevie has a few leads of her own. (Common Sense Media)
The Hand on the Wall by Maureen Johnson (Book 3)
In THE HAND ON THE WALL, Stevie is reeling after the death of her advisor from a house fire. She knows it's no accident, like the other deaths at Ellingham School. She just needs to prove it, like she solved the cold case that originally brought her there. But she may not get the chance to look into the crime at all. Her house mate's Rube Goldberg invention goes haywire -- mysteriously -- and breaks a student's arm, prompting the closure of the school for the rest of the semester. As everyone prepares to go home in a hurry ahead of a massive blizzard, Stevie's ex, David, shows up with a proposition for Stevie and her friends to ride out the storm at the school in secret. It may just be the time Stevie needs to solve the case before she leaves Ellingham for good, or it may be a decision that leads to disaster. (Common Sense Media)
