Maverick Express January 2018
MESSAGE FROM PRINCIPAL TODD CORSETTI
Happy 2018!
“Your success and happiness lies in you. Resolve to keep happy, and your joy and you shall form an invincible host against difficulties.” – Helen Keller
I am excited for the year to come. We will continue to make history in 2018 at Mountainside High School. As our school year continues, I look forward to the opportunities that will present themselves in the months to come. Our students continue to grow into positions of leadership in our building, and I’m excited to see our students explore their areas of interest and talent as we finish winter and move into spring.
January represents a month of culminating studies for our students, resulting in finals during the week of January 29th - February 1st. You can help your student be prepared for finals by making sure he/she is well rested, well fed, and has spent a healthy amount of time preparing for his/her final. Ask your student what each class is requiring for their final assessment so that you can monitor your student’s progress toward it. We want students to view finals week as an opportunity to share the knowledge they have obtained over the first 18 weeks of the year.
We had a great turn out for last month’s Principal’s Coffee. The Principal’s Coffee occurs the third Friday of each month at 9:00am in the community room. This is an informal opportunity to find out what’s new at Mountainside and/or to ask general questions.
Our next Principal’s Coffee is Friday, January 19th.
If you have questions, you can reach me via email at: todd_corsetti@beaverton.k12.or.us
Sue Neeway is my amazing principal’s secretary, and she can be reached through the Mountainside Main Line at 503-356-3500 or by email at sue_neeway@beaverton.k12.or.us

attendance
If your student has been marked absent in a class and he/she feels it is a mistake, he/she should contact their teacher and bring a note from that teacher to the attendance secretary or have their teacher email the attendance secretary to change the absence to excused.
If your student is not feeling well in class, he/she should ask the teacher if they can go to the health room. Many students are texting their parents from their class asking them to come to the school and have the classroom called to excuse them. In order to limit calls made to the classrooms, students need to come to the health room and they will be checked out from there.

finals
As the end of first semester approaches, students will begin preparing for semester finals. Semester finals may take the form of a final project, a presentation, an essay, a test, or some other form of assessment. Teachers will provide students details about finals, as well as information about how to best prepare for the final in their subject area.
Counselors also have tools, resources and tip sheets to support students during this time. These tools and tip sheets are all available on the Resources page of the Counseling website. For any students struggling in a class, we highly recommend that they consider using the Weekly Check Sheet (found on the Resources page) in early January to help them know what work they need to do before the end of the semester. The Weekly Schedule Planner (also found on the Resources page) is also really helpful for students to be able to make a detailed weekly plan to complete work and prepare for finals.
Attached at the end of this newsletter please find the Finals Schedule which will run from Monday, January 29th through Thursday, February 1st. Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday will be shortened days. Friday will be a grading day with no school for students.
student survey
Student Survey
Each year the District surveys students, staff, and parents to gather information for planning, program evaluation, and assessment of progress on the District's Strategic Plan. This year the survey will be conducted at Mountainside in March. The student survey takes about 20 minutes during the regular school day. The data gathered from the survey is anonymous; your child will not put his/her name or other identifying information on the survey. Like other surveys, results will be presented only about groups. No individual data will be reported.
Student surveys of middle and high schools include three optional questions for students to identify their gender, ethnicity/race, and sexual orientation. These questions allow for additional levels of analysis of questions on inclusion, safety and bullying.
Your child may skip questions or stop filling out the survey at any time. Refusing to participate or withdrawing from the survey does not affect your child's grades or class standing in any way. If you or your child do not want to participate, your child can read or do some other activity while his or her classmates complete the survey.
A copy of the survey is available from your child's school and is posted at
https://www.beaverton.k12.or.us/district/research-reports. After reviewing the survey, if you do not want your child to participate, please notify Mountainside High School.
https://www.beaverton.k12.or.us/district/research-reports
· Después de revisar la encuesta, si usted no quiere que su hijo participe, por favor notifique a Mountainside High School.
drama
Auditions for the spring musical, Little Shop of Horrors, will be held Monday, January 8th in the auditorium. Actors will need to prepare a 1one to two minute monologue and all or part of a song from a musical.
No live accompaniment will be provided, so bring a CD with your accompany track or be prepared to sing acapella.
Sign up for an audition time on the black box door. Please contact Kevin Goff with any questions.
activities
Winter Wishes- Dancing in a Winter Wonderland,” our winter semi-formal dance, will be held on Saturday, January 20th from 7:30PM - 10:00PM. Tickets will go on sale January 8th for $10. The following week prices will go up to $15, so make sure you get your tickets early! Tickets will also be available at the door for $20. Guest passes will be due by January 19th. If you happen to be bringing someone who went to our fall dance, Fright Night, their guest passes are good for one year.
To have a successful dance, we need good decorations! We would like to make a forest of artificial trees. If you are looking to earn an hour of community service, please bring in and set up your artificial holiday tree either the afternoon of Friday, January 19th or at 8:00AM on January 20th. You would then take it down either after the dance on Saturday or Sunday morning at 10:00AM. We will label all trees so you will definitely be the only one touching your tree. We also are in need of fake snow. If you want to earn more hours, you can help us set up for the dance and/or come to any of the work parties. Here is the work schedule if you would like to help make our dance beautiful:
- January 10th: Work party, 1:00PM - 3:00PM
- January 17th: Work party 1:00PM - 3:00PM
- January 19th: Work party, 2:30PM - 4:30PM
- January 20th: Setup, 8:00AM - Finish

We hope to see you there!
