Welcome to the 2020-21 School Year!
While the beginning of this school year has not begun in the way we had all hoped, the staff at HPE are so excited to start a new year of learning! It has been great meeting and reconnecting with families at material distribution day and on teacher/family Zoom meetings this week. Throughout the challenges of recent months, we have been overwhelmed by the kind words, caring thoughts, and encouraging gestures of our HPE families and community. HPE teachers and staff have chosen this work because we feel passionate about giving to our kids and community. The support we have received in return helps us know we have chosen the right path!
As we begin this new year, we are committed to bringing high quality instruction that includes strong connections between teachers and students. We know, now more than ever, families are a vital partner in the learning process. Thank you for beginning to foster those partnerships by meeting with your child's teacher yesterday or today. Teachers are meeting with every family, so if you haven't been able to schedule a meeting time with your child's teacher, please do that today.
Other factors that can support a successful year of learning:
- Establish a predictable routine and specific space for serious learning. We have created a structured schedule for virtual learning that will help students keep a routine that supports academic and social growth. Reflecting on the environment for learning that surrounds your child during virtual learning is also helpful. Your child's teacher can make suggestions that help create positive conditions for serious learning.
- Know how to access digital information and virtual meetings. Teachers are sharing all learning activities and information through Canvas this year. There are many parent resources to support families who are new to Canvas (links below). Your child's teacher can also provide information about his/her Canvas page. If you need support with devices, please email our building Technology Specialist at HPETech@hse.k12.in.us. If you need access to WiFi, school WiFi is available in the parking lots of GES, DES, NBE, SCE, and SCI.
- Have materials ready for learning. If you were not able to pick up learning materials for your child on distribution day, we have those materials for you! Please contact your child's teacher or the front office to arrange a time to get these materials.
We are here to support the learning, growth and social development of all kids. Thank you for your partnership towards this goal! Please reach out to us with feedback, questions, or needs. We are excited for the great year ahead!

Counselor's Corner
Welcome back HPE families!
My name is Bethany Magill and I'm your school counselor! This year is starting out very differently but know that we are committed to building relationships and fostering the social emotional growth of our students. During the very first weeks of school students will be learning about building community, Zones of Regulation (more to come about that), tools for regulating emotions, and building hope for the future. Also during this year all classrooms will be working through a social-emotional curriculum called Second Step. This program will teach them skills for learning, emotion management, empathy, and problem solving. We will start the Second Step curriculum after Labor Day. Please know that I am a resource at school and I am here to support your child in their educational journey! In an effort to get know students and families better, I ask that you please complete the very short survey that was mentioned above. Please do not hesitate to reach out to me if you need anything! I have both an office number at HPE and a Google Voice number if text is more convenient for you!
Thank you!

HPE Family Survey
As we return to school virtually, we are also learning to navigate a difficult time for our nation. The global pandemic, economic hardships, and social unrest around racial injustices have created an unprecedented time for us all to negotiate.
In order to provide a safe, supportive, and equitable learning environment for all students, we are collecting information from our K-4 families. This survey asks questions about your student's school experience prior to COVID-19, their experience the last few months during the stay at home order, how the social unrest has impacted them, what concerns you have about learning virtually, and also how your family was personally impacted by COVID-19. Results from this survey will help the HPE staff provide additional supports to your student if needed.
If you have any further questions or concerns about your student or this survey, please reach out to your student's teacher, Miss Magill, school counselor, Mrs. Landez, assistant principal, or Mrs. Burke, principal.
Thank you for your time and thoughtful consideration of this survey!
