edTPA Implementation at Winthrop University
Winthrop is moving away from this locally designed IWS structure beginning this academic year and will be implementing the edTPA (an educational teacher performance assessment). Those of you familiar with the national board process will find many similarities between edTPA and the expectations and process for a national board certification. We have developed a specially designed information sheet that outlines our edTPA implementation plans.
Although edTPA is a national assessment and can be scored externally, Winthrop will be taking the 2015-2016 and 2016-2017 academic years to transition to external evaluations of candidate work. The edTPA process developed by SCALE (Stanford Center for Assessment, Learning, & Equity) includes very specific materials and guidance for teacher candidates as well as common scoring guidelines that are content area specific. During this transition time, we will need local mentor teachers who are willing to evaluate portfolios from candidates in related content areas. After Spring 2017 we will continue to work with some mentor teachers to evaluate a small subset of edTPA submissions for internal assessment needs.
To become a local evaluator, individuals must attend a training session at Winthrop. Once trained, we will contact mentors each semester as needed to help with evaluation. Being trained does not obligate you to evaluate, nor does it guarantee that we will have enough portfolios for everyone to evaluate each semester. However, training (approximately 8 hours) is required to be eligible to evaluate.
We encourage you to attend training even if you do not want to evaluate. The training will help you learn more about the edTPA process through which teacher candidates will be evaluated. Individuals who are able to evaluate for Winthrop will be paid $60 per portfolio in appreciation for the time and effort to support Winthrop and our teacher candidates in this process. Because of the significant difference in the number of teacher candidates in each program, the need for evaluators will vary, and you will be able to indicate your availability each term.
