SLCS District Update

11-11-2021

Note from the Superintendent

Greetings SLCS Families and Staff Members!

Today is a day to honor all who have served in the United States Armed Forces. On behalf of all of us with South Lyon Community Schools, I want to offer a heartfelt thank you to all of our Veterans for their sacrifice and service to our country. If you haven’t done so already, please take time today, or in the near future, to extend your appreciation to the Veterans among your family and friends.

It has been a tough week with the passing of Mrs. Badish, one of our MMS music teachers. As a school community we have worked to support those in need while also staying focused on learning and enjoying the moments, which is what we believe Mrs. Badish would want. As a reminder, a public visitation for Angie Badish will be held on Friday, Nov. 12 from 2:00-9:00 at Lynch & Sons Funeral Home, 340 N. Pontiac Trail, Walled Lake. A brief visitation will be held on Saturday, Nov. 13 from 10:00-11:00 followed by a service. Flowers can be sent to the funeral home.

Sincerely,

Steven Archibald

Superintendent

Revised SLCS Quarantine Protocol

The District has continuously worked to find a balance between the importance of in-person schooling for our students and the desire to help guard against the spread of COVID-19 in our schools and community.

We have been monitoring school associated cases and quarantine data throughout the school year. Based on the District’s current protocol, all school associated close contacts are being identified and those who are unmasked are being asked to quarantine. The protocol being followed this year has resulted in far fewer quarantines than last year which has more students in school.

The District data, as of today, shows that less than 1.5% of the students quarantined due to a school associated close contact have subsequently tested positive within fourteen days from the known exposure. Total identified close contacts (masked and unmasked) who subsequently tested positive is slightly less than one percent. Based on this data, we will be implementing a revised quarantine protocol for students identified as a close contact from a school-based exposure effective Friday, November 12th. If your child is currently in quarantine and you are unsure whether your child may return, please contact your school.

Students will be quarantined from school by the District under the following conditions:

  • The student is currently in isolation after testing positive for COVID-19; or

  • The student has displayed symptoms of COVID-19 and is waiting for test results; or

  • The student is currently in quarantine for an exposure to COVID-19 outside of the school setting, as directed by the local health department; or

  • The student’s exposure to COVID-19 is related to an identified cluster or outbreak within a classroom or group such as an athletic team, school club, or co-curricular activity.

Asymptomatic students who are identified as close contacts, regardless of masking, will not be quarantined from school by the District unless one of the above conditions is met. Students who are currently quarantined and do not meet one of the conditions listed above may return to school on Friday, November 12th.

Other mitigating practices will remain in place. Masks are required when entering school buildings and while on the bus. Students who are displaying symptoms while at school will be sent home and may return to school when the following conditions have been met:

  • Student remained home for 10 days, they have been fever free for 24 hours (without medication), and their symptoms have improved; OR

  • Student tests negative for COVID-19 through an Antigen or PCR test, they have been fever free for 24 hours (without medication), and their symptoms have improved.

The District will continue to identify school associated close contacts and notify families if their child has been identified as a close contact. It is recommended that close contacts monitor for any symptoms of COVID-19 and absolutely stay home if they are showing any signs of illness. Please access this link for information regarding students being able to attend school if someone in their household has tested positive for COVID-19.

We will continue to monitor district data and may reinstate the current quarantine protocol if necessary based on the impact of this change in practice.
