A Message from Mr. Nelson in the Art Room
UWS Exhibition highlights local youth talents… and their teachers!
Art teachers do more than cultivate deeper understandings of line, shape, color, and
form – they foster flexible thinking, teamwork, and an ability to handle failure. Art
teachers encourage elastic thinking and inclusive behavior and share an
appreciation for history and story telling.
This winter the Univeristy of Wisconsin, Superior is highlighting both sides of the
creative classroom with an exhibition at the Kruk gallery. The show features
artwork from grades k-12 in Superior alongside that of the teachers who foster
creativity in these students.
Tim Nelson is a teacher in Superior and speaks to the importance of exhibitions like
this one: “It is essential for students to showcase their work in the community; it not
only prepares students for the real world but it also shows them their work can
make an impact on others.”
The exhibition is free and open to the public. It will feature artwork from 4 of our Blizzard students, along with work from Mr. Nelson himself! We invite you to support them at the reception on January 30th at 5pm. Our Blizzards that were selected to be in this exhibit are:
Mikaila Berg
5th grade
“Sugar Skull”
Amelia Kokolis
2nd grade
“Matisse Paper Cutouts”
Nikki Carlson
3rd grade
“Britto Composition”
August Johnson

Bear's Den Fundraiser
We are excited to share that Mrs. Jones' lego robotics kit fundraiser has been FULLY FUNDED in just a few days!
I am overwhelmed by the support you all have shown in just a couple of days! Wow! These additional LEGO robotic kits to my school and library program will benefit and inspire so many kids for a long time to come! This year alone they will be used with our 3rd-5th graders during their regular media time with me, as well as with some of our classroom teachers to support STEM learning in their classrooms. I also provide coding and robotics club opportunities for students during recess and after school, so I can use them there as well. The kids absolutely love building with these kits. Just yesterday 4th grade students were making and programming a robotic hand with a motion sensor to pick things up along the lines of how a prosthetic device works. They were so excited to show off their hand and how it worked. Not only does building and programming promote higher-order thinking, it also helps to teach social-emotional skills as students learn to work with each other to create and problem-solve! Thank you so much for supporting these young minds and hearts! We will send pictures soon!
With gratitude,
Mrs. Jones
