Florence 1 Schools Instructional Staff: Keeping the Flame & Carrying the Torch During the COVID-19 Experience
Donna Cook, Coordinator of Mathematics
I am in complete awe of how our teachers have risen to the challenge of creating and delivering meaningful learning experiences under these circumstances. They have definitely gone above and beyond their traditional duties, and for that we am grateful.
Days have consisted of planning out what content to cover for the remainder of the school year, working with teachers virtually to collect videos and lessons that can be utilized by Florence teachers in their google classrooms, and trouble-shooting technical issues with lessons and videos.
Because many parents have forgotten how to assist their children with math, we added videos to reteach pages on the parent portal to enable parents to refresh their math knowledge. This is a project we plan to expand next year in an effort to help our parents throughout the school year.
Lastly, we are currently planning for the 20-21 school year to make sure we have the resources needed for all students and teachers. This includes making preparations for some of our schools to transition to different grade level configurations.
Kim Kinley-Howard, Coordinator of English Language Arts
A primary daily focus has been planning instruction that ensured students had quality learning experiences while making those much-needed accommodations for virtual learning.
Opportunities to support online instruction evolved as personalized video lessons were created for our students and sourced from an enthusiastic group of teachers willing to share their lessons and expertise with their colleagues.
Online academic instructional providers also supplemented what has been offered within the district. I am particularly delighted about the insightful lessons that have been delivered that rigorously align to our state standards.
Recognizing our current times, teachers have done a seamless job appropriately and measuredly incorporating Covid-19 issues into their instruction through research, written reports, and creative responses. Even with addressing these topics, students continue to practice and hone literacy skills they will need moving beyond this current instructional experience.
Parents and family members have become integral partners in instruction -- at all grade levels. Uploading essential instructional content to the F1S Parent E-Learning Portal for families provided specific content and instructional strategies necessary to support their children’s learning.

"And the beat goes on..."
Since the arrival of COVID-19, I have been productive through collaborating with one of our community partners, the Florence County Museum, by coordinator the collection and distribution of over 4,500 art kits for our Pre-K through third grade students in Florence 1 Schools.
I have also spent meaningful time communicating with our teachers, attending rehearsals through google meet, and sharing resources to keep our students actively engaged and learning.
Although we will not have our summer gifted and talented program camps for visual arts and music, I am excited about the opportunities that are ahead in the fall as we prepare to launch our Afterschool Arts Academy!
We are are away from the buildings, but the Arts are alive and well on our eLearning platform.
