Southmont High School
October 2022
Reflections From the Principal
Dear Mountie Students and Families,
It's been a wonderful month at Southmont! Believe it or not, we have completed the first 7 weeks of the 2022-2023 school year. This means we are roughly 5 weeks from the end of the first trimester. As a reminder, student’s final trimester grade is based upon the following breakdown:
40% - 1st Six Weeks Grade
40% - 2nd Six Weeks Grade
20% - Final Exam Grade
For the most up-to-date information on your student's grades and assignments, please check your Powerschool Family Access account. If you are unable to login to your account, feel free to call the office for assistance (765-866-0350).
Due to many requests for Club meeting date changes and overlap in Club meeting dates, we have added an additional day each week for Clubs to meet. Clubs will now meet on Tuesdays and Fridays each week. We have a NEW Club meeting schedule, which can be found below. The Club meeting schedule will also be emailed to all students.
We have much to be grateful for at Southmont. We have incredible students, a caring and hard working staff, wonderful families, and an extremely supportive community. As always, we appreciate your continued commitment to prioritizing your student's education. We believe that students are most successful when a strong collaboration between home and school is present. If I can be of any assistance to anyone, please do not hesitate to reach out to me.
Yours in education,
Mrs. Hammond

Mountie Moments - Homecoming 2022!

Montgomery County Message About School Safety
Dear Montgomery County Parents and Guardians,
We are seeing an alarming number of incidents around the country involving schools: a call or text is received by school officials or outside individuals about a shooting at the school, or someone has a gun. Police respond, only to discover the report was a hoax.
Just last week, Crawfordsville High School received such a message. Thankfully, the threat was found to be false. However, it frightened many students, parents, staff and community members. This week more than a dozen schools in Minnesota were targeted with “swatting” incidents, reports of a false shooter or mass-casualty event. Recently threats in Denver forced the city to shut down all 25 public library branches, and a nearby high school to cancel classes amid a surge of hoaxes reported at schools across the state. A Texas teen was arrested for calling in a fake threat to a campus as a “joke,” prompting a warning from Fort Worth police against school hoaxes.
The calls are part of a trend that is disrupting school days, prompting lockdowns, and further traumatizing communities already on edge due to the tragic violence that occurred in Uvalde, Texas in May.
As parents and caregivers, we ask for your assistance in managing these threats so that law enforcement and schools can best respond.
If you receive a call, text or social media post that poses a threat to any school, call local law enforcement AND the school immediately. Please do not text, call or post the threat to others. That may cause unnecessary fear and panic for everyone.
As much as you love your student(s), if a threat is made, it is important that you do not rush to the school. We need to allow law enforcement to move in swiftly and eliminate the threat. If access to the school is compromised because outside individuals are prohibiting entry, that does not allow the officers to secure the school.
If you see something, say something. Call the school AND local law enforcement immediately. Again, please do not share misinformation or rumors. The confusion only makes it more difficult to manage the situation.
We thank you for your assistance in keeping our students, schools, and communities safe.
Respectfully,
Dr. Scott Bowling, Crawfordsville Schools Superintendent
Dr. Chad Cripe, Southmont Schools Superintendent
Dr. Colleen Moran, North Montgomery Superintendent
Ryan Needham, Montgomery County Sheriff
Aaron Mattingly, Crawfordsville Police Chief

Southmont Schools ~ Parent Survey
Dear Parents/Guardians,
I am excited to share that Southmont Schools is in the midst of conducting an all-inclusive review of teaching and learning in our schools. The review will highlight our successes and help us focus on specific areas of growth. In order to ensure the process is comprehensive of all stakeholders and completely anonymous, Southmont is partnering with Equitable Education Solutions (EES) to guide the work.
I would like to invite you to participate in a parent survey that will allow you the opportunity to share your perspective and experiences in our schools. The survey should only take 10-15 minutes to complete. Your feedback is extremely valuable to our work and will shape our future goals.
Please complete the parent survey (linked below) by October 28th.
