Introdution
Farmers say pigs are one of the cleanest animals, even though they swim in mud. According to the Encyclopedia Bntannica, pigs are mammals (1). This means that pigs have hair, give birth to live babies and are warm blooded. Pigs were considered wild until “Christopher Columbus” introduced the domesticated animal into the states in 1493 (Columbus 7).

Swine came to the new world in 1000. They came to the new world when the Vikings came. Christopher Columbus came to the new world in 1493 and he had a pig that was not wild. In 1493, he lived in Puerto Rico and there he had 8 pigs. Swine moved west to the Louisiana Purchase, in 1803.The first major packing plant built in Cincinnati, Ohio (History of Swine Production, side 5, 7)

Yorkshire
“According to the National Swine Registry In 1884 the National Pig Breeder's Association was founded. With Lore Moneton as it’s first President. The Association began the task of compiling annually a volume of the Herd Book. Now the Yorkshire hogs were classed as belonging to the Large White breed, but for fifty years and more they were as often as not referred to as Yorkshires (NSR 15). “Farmers saw what Yorkshire could do for them and soon started to accept Yorkshire breeding stock. Mothering ability, larger litters, more length, more scale and frame were so badly needed by many producers that they were again ready to try Yorkshires, and this time they were satisfied (NSR 19).
Hampshire
“According to Mr. Thomas there are about 73 different breeds of pigs” (Thomas 3). “National Swine Registry states, Hampshire breed of hogs may well be one of the oldest original early American breeds of hogs in existence today”. They were noted and criticized for their large size, but admired for their prolificacy, hardy vigor, foraging ability and outstanding carcass qualities. The origin of the Hampshire name came form a county in England. Descendants of these early importations gravitated to Kentucky where they became quite popular because of the hardiness, vigor, prolificacy and foraging characteristics that they possessed.
Duroc
”National Swine Registry states that the Duroc breed was originally called the Duroc-Jersey of hogs had its origin in the eastern United States and in the Corn Belt. Two distinct strains of hogs, the Jersey Red of New Jersey and the Duroc of New York, entered into the building of the Duroc-Jersey breed. The strain of hogs that later became known as the Jersey Reds (NSR 1-4).
