Dr. Chun Lim - Sleep and Adolescents
The Sudbury Public Schools Start Time Subcommittee and the Lincoln-Sudbury Regional High School Start Time Subcommittee present Dr. Chun Lim, MD, PhD, cognitive neurologist at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center and assistant professor of neurology at Harvard Medical School, on Thursday, January 31 at 7:00pm in the Curtis Middle School auditorium. Dr. Lim will be discussing the most recent medical research on adolescent sleep.
Dr. Lim presented to the Weston Public Schools in June 2017, which was followed by Weston’s implementation of later start times for their middle and high schools in September 2018. His presentation is part of ongoing efforts to educate the community on the public health issues related to early school start times and adolescent sleep deprivation.
SPS’ Start Time Subcommittee (SSTC), composed of administrators, town employees, faculty, school committee members, and parents, formed in 2016, following the American Academy of Pediatrics’ recommendation for later start times for middle and high schools. The current subcommittee’s goal is to present a recommendation to the School Committee this spring, for implementation in fall 2020, pending a successful vote by the School Committee.
In 2017, Lincoln-Sudbury created the LSRHS Sleep and School Start Time Committee, composed of School Committee members, staff, and community members, to gather input about a possible change in start time at LS. That committee surveyed parents, students, faculty, and staff and determined that a majority of LS students are not getting enough sleep according to the American Academy of Pediatrics guidelines but noted the many issues surrounding a change in start time. The current LS Start Time Subcommittee is continuing the work started by the 2017 committee and will present implementation options to the full school committee later this year for potential implementation in fall 2020.
Dr. Lim’s presentation will also be broadcast live on Comcast channel 9 and Verizon channel 32, as well as live streamed on sudburytv.org. It will be available to view via video on demand on sudburytv.org.
From The School Nurse....
Notice to Parents Regarding Fifth Disease
Fifth Disease is a mild viral illness of children and adults, which is presented in three stages. The first stage is mild and consists of headache, body ache, sore throat and a low grade fever lasting 3-4 days. This is the infectious stage. The second stage is a dormant stage lasting 5-10 days. The third stage involves a bright red rash on the face followed by a lace-like rash on arms and legs. This rash can last 2-3 days or as long as several weeks. In adults, in addition to the rash, this disease may cause painful arthritis type symptoms.
The virus that causes fifth disease lives in the nose and throat, and is sprayed into the air when an infected person sneezes, coughs, or talks. Other people nearby can inhale the virus. However, it seems to take close, prolonged contact (like living in the same household or being in the same classroom) to spread the disease. Fifth disease is so common in children that over 60% of adults in the state are immune because they have already had fifth disease.
The Department of Public Health has brought to our attention that some pregnant women may be at risk when exposed to this virus during the first stage. They have advised school departments to notify pregnant staff or people working with children, such as parents, if cases of fifth disease are identified.
There have been many cases in the Sudbury community since late fall. This week I have been notified of 2 confirmed cases. Parents are requested to contact the school nurse if your child has been diagnosed with fifth disease. Pregnant women are advised to contact their physician for more information. Questions about fifth disease can be directed to the Massachusetts Department of Public Health at 617-983-6800, or you can call me at 978-443-1085, ext 6005.
Sincerely,
Carol Bradford, RN
