The TIGER Times
Yamhill Carlton High School
Week of February 4-9, 2019
Greetings Parents/Guardians,
If you don't feel your student has developed those advocacy skills yet, feel free to email your child's math teacher and ask them to get the ball rolling on this support. Students can always access other teachers during Advisory too, but most teachers have students they are responsible for during that time period and have limited ability to tutor.
In addition, please remind your students that ALL teachers are available before and after school most days.
We hope second semester is a positive experience for your student. If you have concerns, I encourage you to reach out to your student's teacher, our counseling department, or administration. We truly want your student to be successful.
Sincerely,
Cindy Schubert
Principal

Scene Study Showcase
On Friday, January 25th the Yamhill Carlton High School Scene Study class put on their 3rd annual Scene Study Showcase in the YCIS Gym. The showcase is a student directed final class project that features scenes, monologues, poetry, dance, and vocal performances. Students work collaboratively to plan an evening of performances that highlight the acting skills and performance techniques they have honed over the course of the semester. This year, the showcase was special because it took place on the renovated stage space in the YCIS gym that is the new performance venue for the YC Theater Department. As part of the evening of performances, technical theater students had the opportunity to showcase the new stage lighting system and sound equipment. Next up, for the YC Theater Department is the All District Musical production of Meredith Wilson's The Music Man, Jr. featuring performers 2nd-12th grade. The performance dates are April 11-13, 2019 at 7:00pm in the YCIS Gym.
Volunteer Needed for Computer Science Class
This past semester Robert Zarfas has been co-teaching an Intro to Computer Science class with the help of four software developer professional volunteers. Microsoft Philanthropies TEALS is the organization that Yamhill Carlton has partnered with to allow us to offer this critical Computer Science class. And, hopefully in the future, Yamhill Carlton can offer additional computer science classes.
Robert’s class needs an additional volunteer. We are looking for a volunteer with experience in Python that would be willing to come into the classroom (or teleconference in) one or two days a week. The class meets on A days from 8:10 to 9:30 am.Additionally, all TEALS volunteers are required to watch 4 hours of “How to Teach” training videos made over last summer.
If you know of anyone with a software background, please have them contact Helen Henry (Helen@TEALSk12.org). Helen is our Senior Regional Manager for the TEALS program.
Thank you so much for your time and consideration.

Oregon Healthy Teen (OHT) Survey
On February 12, our school will be administering the Oregon Healthy Teen (OHT) Survey. The survey data are used and applied at the community, county, regional, and state levels to assess youth needs, develop and evaluate the effectiveness of a variety of projects and programs that promote healthy adolescence in Oregon prevention, mental health and suicide prevention. After completion of the survey, our school will receive a data-rich profile report of findings, which will feature a new school climate and safety/bullying section, among other great data.
The survey is scheduled to take place during advisory. We are asking for your help in administering this important survey.
Approximately three days before the survey takes place, you will receive a packet of survey materials. The packet will include instructions for administering the survey via _<paper/online surveying>_, and the necessary materials to do so. In preparation for the survey, there are a few things that you should know:
- Passive Parental Consent. Passive parental consent forms will be distributed to parents. You will be notified if any students in your class do not have parental consent to take the survey.
- Scheduling. The students will need an entire class period to complete the survey.
- Alternate activity. The student survey is voluntary. An alternate activity must be provided for the students who elect not to participate. The alternate activity should be something the student can do quietly at their desk (i.e., reading or written activity). Please be prepared to assign an alternate activity for your class on the day the survey is given.
I encourage you to contact me at with any questions you may have. Thank you in advance for your valuable assistance on this research project. We couldn’t do it without you!
Sincerely,
Cindy Schubert
