Welcome to Kindergarten!
Our ELA work is going really well. Your children are learning very quickly! We are introducing the letters/keywords and sounds for t, b, and f this week in Fundations, as well as learning how to write them. This week I will be beginning to assess their letter naming fluency, ability to hear the first sound of a word, and word recognition skills. Also, I will be finding out which level books to start them on. This will enable me to really meet your child where they're at, and individualize the curriculum to meet their needs. I will still be allowing them to choose books from our class library to take home for their reading homework this week.
Thank you to all of you that have started reading 10 mins each night to/with your child. Don't forget to send the book back next day so that they can choose another one to take home. These books are often my own personal books, I just love to lend them out for reading at home, but I do need them back so that we can maintain an awesome classroom library. Your child may only color one apple a night, even if they read longer than 10 minutes. The 10 minutes is a minimum suggested time.
A big focus for us at the moment in reading and writing, is identifying the first sound in a word to help us read/write the word. See if your child can locate a word in the text using it's first letter sound i.e reading a page about dolphins, point to the dolphin and say what sound does the word "dolphin" start with? When they identify the sound, they look for a word in the text that begins with that letter and they read it..."dolphin". Then they look around for any more "dolphin" words in the text.
Math is still all about counting, and they'll be encountering the "counting jar" this week as they learn strategies for counting objects accurately. They will also be sorting shapes by attributes, as well as continuing to learn to read and write the numbers 0-20. Have them count things on their dinner plates e.g. how many peas are on your plate? or silverware/plates if they're setting the table. There are so many things to count!

Superstars!!
Miriam Scott and Wren London have both volunteered to be our room parents this year. Thank you both for stepping up - I know that you'll get lots of support from the fabulous families in our classroom this year.
