Information and resources
HOOTS Crisis Clinics open during the summer!
We are excited to share a mental health resource that will support 4J students over the summer! Beginning July 10th through August 11th the HOOTS Crisis Clinics will run three days a week! We will be at South every Tuesday, Churchill every Wednesday and Sheldon every Thursday. Each clinic will run from 10AM-2PM.
The HOOTS program, an offshoot program from White Bird's CAHOOTS, will continue our services during 4J summer intensive. The clinic contains a crisis worker and an EMT, our services are HIPAA compliant, and we can provide short term counseling, crisis intervention, basic first aid and community referrals. We are in schools to provide extra support to students who are experiencing anxiety, depression, suicidal ideation, difficulty meeting their basic needs, issues at school, at home, with friends or with family...and so much more! The clinic can connect students to services in the community, long term counseling and even get them signed up for OHP on site.
Anyone can access the clinic and students can sign up by doing the following:
Students enrolled in 4J summer intensive can self-refer or get referred by a friend, teacher, counselor, parent or other school administrator here. As always, please consider referring students who are struggling to us!
Students who are not enrolled in 4J summer intensive but are 4J students and need support over the summer can book appointments here. It is important to us to continue serving youth over the summer!

Summer Intensive Program Info & Registration (grades 9–12 in 2023–24)
Let’s continue the learning! Eugene School District 4J’s popular summer intensive program provides students who will be in high school next year an opportunity to extend their learning into the summer months.
The short courses are designed and led by outstanding 4J teachers to engage students in innovative learning that includes meaningful experiences outside of a traditional classroom setting. High school credit is offered upon successful completion. Classes can last a few days to up to four weeks from June 19–August 11.
Course offerings explore exciting and timely topics of global and national importance and include cultural exploration and culturally diverse themes, as well as the arts and sciences.
Currently more than 30 summer intensive courses are scheduled, covering a wide range of topics including beekeeping, sewing, crimes scene science, robotics, soccer, weightlifting, engineering, Chinese language and culture, barista 101, and stop motion animation. New courses will be added throughout the spring.
Courses are offered at all four high schools; however, students may register for any course, regardless of their home high school.
To ensure maximum participation, students may enroll in only one course during the initial enrollment period. Depending on availability, open registration to enroll in more classes may be announced in early June.

EOA 12th Grade Families
EOA 12th Grade Families,
Next week marks the halfway point of the final trimester of the year. For Seniors, there are only 33 school days of high school left. I want to remind families that EOA does not have graduation ceremonies, those occur at the physical schools. All EOA students are co-enrolled with their brick and mortar schools, so you should still be receiving their emails and announcements. Each school has a different schedule around graduation so you will need to connect with your physical school directly for answers to questions regarding cap and gown pick up, walking partners, or tickets. They should have key dates and deadlines posted on their websites. If you want your student to walk in a graduation ceremony, please connect with your co-enrolled school.

State testing for 6-8 graders
The bigger item from 4j and the Oregon Department of Education (ODE) regarding required OSAS (State Testing) for 2023:
- It was announced to staff on Friday 4/7, that ODE and 4j will be requiring all students to take the required State of Oregon assessments (OSAS) as required by their grade level. In the EOA at the MS level - all 6th, 7th, and 8th graders will be required to take the Math and ELA assessments, and the 8th graders will be required to take the State Science test in addition. Teachers will be shifting support time and availability to administer the tests remotely for those that choose this option and do not Opt out of testing.
- Parents may opt out of Math and ELA and Exempt Out of Science (8th only) at any time - the earlier the better. (Thank you to the many families that have already returned one or both opt-out and exempt-out forms!) We are being trained and adjusting our support schedules as we are expected to coordinate, schedule and test students online (if students do not test at their home schools or opt out) in a ratio of 5:1 students to proctor for online (remote) testing through secure browsers.
- Families that wish to have their students take the OSAS tests via remote testing will be hearing from EOA staff about testing dates as soon as those arrangements are complete - thanks to those that filled out the earlier request form for this option.
- Parents may contact their neighborhood MS to arrange to test for all the required tests in-person. Call the front office and ask to speak to the building's testing coordinator and identify yourself as an EOA dually enrolled parent - they will explain their schedule to you and make the necessary arrangement for in-person testing.
- Parents may opt out of testing (one form for Math and ELA) and another template for Exempting out of Science (8th grade only) - 4j link:
- Return any opt-out or exempt out forms to Mr. Wade (or an EOA administrator) and we'll get them to our testing coordinator.
Parents of EOA 11th graders
Every spring in Oregon, students in grades 3-8 and 11 participate in the Oregon Statewide Assessments (OSAS). They are tested in English Language Arts and Math (and Science in 5th, 8th, and 11th grade). Students who are enrolled in remote instruction may take these tests from home or another remote location. For any student testing remotely, a parent/guardian remote test administration agreement (attached) must be filled out and signed. This document both guarantees your child a right to privacy and guarantees that they will do their own work on the test. Please read the agreement carefully and sign accordingly. Also attached is another document that gives more information about the test.
Families have three options:
- Opt out of testing- this requires filling out a form for English Language Arts and Math, and a separate form for Science. Forms can be found here: https://www.4j.lane.edu/instruction/assessment/state-tests-opting-out-and-requesting-an-exemption/
- Students can test in person at their neighborhood school, this requires notifying the school.
- Students can test remotely with EOA, this requires another acknowledgement form (attached)

Early Release Day Moving to Wednesdays for the 2023-24 School Year
All 4J schools will release early on Wednesdays instead of Fridays starting this fall to support collaboration among our educators.
Early-release days on Wednesdays will best support the new schedule that 4J high schools will follow starting this fall. In addition, comments from educators indicated that dedicated time for professional development and collaboration is more impactful during the middle of the workweek rather than at its end. Early-release times will remain unchanged.
Understanding the importance to families of having consistent school schedules, the change to a Wednesday early-release day will apply to all schools.
Wednesday early-release days are not new to our district. Many 4J schools released students early during the middle of the week prior to our district moving to a standard schedule for all schools in 2018, when Friday was selected as the early-release day.
2023–24 School Calendar Approved
The school calendar for the coming school year has been approved.
School will start after the Labor Day weekend: kindergartners and students in grades 6 and 9 will return to classes on Wednesday, September 6, while students in all other grades will start school the following day, Thursday, September 7.
Other notable dates:
• Teachers Report: Tuesday, August 29
• Parent-Teacher Conferences: November 20–22
• Thanksgiving Break: November 23–24
• Winter Break: December 18–January 2
• Spring Break: March 25–29
• Last Day for Students: Thursday, June 13
New High School Schedule Details Approved
The details of the new high school schedule have been finalized.
Under the new 4x2 A/B/C schedule, Mondays will be flex days and Wednesdays will be early release days. There will be no double-blocking of IHS and AP classes. While it has been shared that both middle and high schools will move to a semester calendar next fall, this schedule applies only to the high schools as work is continuing to identify options for our middle schools.
Incoming 9th graders to SEHS
March 10, 2023
Dear Families of Incoming SEHS 9th Graders,
It is with great pleasure that I welcome you to South Eugene High School! Our school community is rooted in the quality and commitment of our staff, but thrives on the excellence of our current and incoming students. Below, you will find information about parent events and classroom forecasting that may be helpful in your planning.
We are committed to providing a seamless transition from middle school to high school, where students feel both excited and prepared to begin their journey with us. Save the date for our in-person Incoming 9th Grade Parent Information Night event on Tuesday, April 18th from 6:00-7:30 pm. Our administrators, 9th grade counselor, department leads, and 9th grade
transition coordinator look forward to sharing information and reviewing the course selection (forecasting) process, including information pertaining to students in both Classic South and IHS. More information, including a full schedule of the evening, will be shared closer to the event. For families who are unable to attend, a recording of the information will be available the
following school day. A few days after our April 6th evening presentation, the SEHS scheduling team will visit feeder middle schools to meet with our incoming 9th grade students for course selection (forecasting). We will be visiting Roosevelt Middle School on April 24th and Spencer Butte
Middle School on April 25th. A separate virtual forecasting session for our current EOA 8th graders will take place in April during advisory.
Students who reside inside the South Eugene attendance area and are not attending Roosevelt or Spencer Butte Middle Schools, must submit a completed enrollment packet to SEHS. Digital enrollment packets can be found here and on the 4j website (4j.lane.edu), under the Parent tab > Enroll/Register. Please submit completed packets along with the supporting
documents to the SEHS Registrar, Melinda Shull, between April 4th - April 21st. You may contact the Registrar's office at shull@4j.lane.edu or 541-790-8015 with any questions regarding enrollment. Once enrollment packets have been turned in, our scheduling team will visit Ridgeline, Village School, Oak Hill, and other schools in May to assist students with their course
selection. Please note that scheduling does not work on a first-come, first-served basis, so students from non-feeder middle schools will not be at a disadvantage forecasting in May. Stay up-to-date with events and dates for make-up forecasting and parent Q& A opportunities by visiting our Incoming 9th Grade info page located on our SEHS homepage https://sites.google.com/4j.lane.edu/9th-grade-information/home. Please reach out to Emily
Rousseau (rousseau_e@4j.lane.edu) with any questions you may have. We are excited to partner with you to ensure a smooth transition into South Eugene High School.
Warmly,
Emily Rousseau
9th Grade Transition Coordinator
North Eugene High School Claymore Chapter of the National Honor Society
The National Honor Society chapter of North Eugene High School is a duly chartered and affiliated chapter of this prestigious national organization. Membership is open to those students who meet the required standards in four areas of evaluation: scholarship, service, leadership, and character.
SCHOLARSHIP
To meet the scholarship requirement a student must have a cumulative GPA of 3.6 or better. Students entering grades 11th - 12th are eligible for membership.
SERVICE
To meet the service requirement a student must complete at least 15 hours of service. These hours involve activities that are done on behalf of others, and have been completed without any financial or material compensation or for high school credit. Service DOES NOT include the activities of clubs or teams that result in fundraising of money or materials for the use of that club or team. Tasks completed for family members do not count as community service. Service can include contributions to school, classmates, and community.
LEADERSHIP
To demonstrate the leadership criteria a student must successfully serve in at least three positions of responsibility during high school. This leadership requirement can be met by a variety of activities and roles. For example, a student may hold school offices or leadership roles, show initiative in promoting school activities, and have a positive influence on peers in upholding school ideals. They may also exemplify positive attitudes, inspire positive behavior in others, and be dependable for any responsibility accepted. Leadership activities must extend beyond one meeting or event.
CHARACTER
To meet the character requirement a student must demonstrate the following six qualities: respect, responsibility, trustworthiness, fairness, caring, and citizenship. Students must also take criticism willingly and accept recommendations graciously; exemplify, consistently, desirable qualities of behavior; uphold principles of morality and ethics; demonstrate the highest standards of honesty and reliability; and show courtesy, concern, and respect for others.
NHS COMMITMENT
National Honor Society membership requires a substantial commitment of time for each member. Membership requirements include bimonthly meetings, maintenance of a 3.6 unweighted GPA, and participation in mandatory group service activities. Failure to meet any of these expectations can result in probationary status and/or loss of membership; once membership is revoked, a member cannot be reinstated.
The entire staff at NEHS will screen all eligible students. Any issues of character and leadership that arise will be discussed by the Faculty Advisory Committee, who make the membership selections. Decisions will be made by the NHS advisors and all new members will be invited to a formal induction ceremony. Once inducted, new members are required to maintain the same level of performance (or better) in all four criteria that led to their selection.
NHS MEMBERSHIP
Acceptance into the NHS is based on GPA, two short essays on service and leadership, a strong dedication to community service, excellent leadership skills, and a solid ethical foundation. You will also provide the names of THREE references who will be contacted to complete a confidential reference form.
As active members, students must
-
- Maintain a 3.6 GPA
-
- Attend all meetings (on a bi-monthly basis)
-
- Serve 15 hours of community service during the school year and participate in group service activities
TIPS
-
- Provide well written, quality answers on your actual candidate form. If you do not use complete sentences or proper grammar, your candidate form will not be reviewed. For example, do not write abbreviated words, use slang, write only one sentence, or simply put N/A.
-

Black History Month-Other Dedicated Web Sites
Black History Month
It wasn’t until the 1976 that Black History Month was nationally-recognized.
Decades later, and after many individual towns had decided to recognize Black History Month, President Gerald Ford made Black History Month a national observance, as an article by TIME points out.
The month of February was chosen for two specific reasons.
According to History.com, February was chosen as the specific month for Black History Month because it’s the month of both Frederick Douglass and Abraham Lincoln’s birthdays.
Each year’s Black History Month has a different theme and focus.
You might be surprised to learn that each Black History Month has a different area of focus. According to the ASALH site, themes for the last decade have included The Emancipation Proclamation/March On Washington (2013), Civil Rights in America (2014), Sites Of African American Memories (2016), The Crisis In Black Education (2017), African Americans in Times Of War (2018), and Black Migrations (2019). For 2020, the theme of the month was “African Americans and the Vote.”
