FAB FIRSTIES (1A) WORKING HARD!
In 1A, our core subjects, Reading and Math, are keeping us very busy and our skills are getting stronger and stronger everyday!!! We are reading, reading, reading in 1A everyday! We especially love to read with our new Superkids Reading Series! We read our stories in our readers in small groups, and then Partner Read… knee to knee, shoulder to shoulder with a Reading Buddy! We also love to read our leveled readers which are fiction as well as non-fiction. Our Super Duper Magazines are also so interesting and fun to read with our teachers or with our buddies!
In addition to the Superkids materials, we also get to bring home a Book-Bag filled with books that we pick out from our classroom library with our teacher and get to keep for 2 weeks! We also read books about whatever topic we are learning in science or social studies or holiday themes on our iPads on the Epic app. The Freckle and Starfall Reading apps are so much fun too!! Taking AR quizzes are very important in our weekly station routine, and visiting the AR store is just the icing on the cake!! In Math, we’ve started Addition Facts timed tests and are doing great! Place Value is also at the top of our list of favorite hands-on activities!
We had a blast on Fat Tuesday, better known as Mardi Gras Day! We ate chocolate chip pancakes with syrup and whipped cream! Yummy! But then the next day, Ash Wednesday, we prayerfully received our ashes and made our Lenten wreaths with mini grapevine wreaths for the Crown and toothpicks for the thorns. Every time we are “caught” doing what Jesus would do, we can remove one of the thorns from His crown!
We are also busy collecting canned foods for Catholic Charities for almsgiving, praying through our Lenten calendars, and trying super hard to keep to our Lenten sacrifices of giving up candy, video games and even chips!!!
Well, as you can see… there’s a lot going on right now in First Grade…But we are looking forward to Nevada Reading Week and Dr. Seuss’ birthday too! ~Mrs. Manfredi

DIOCESAN SCIENCE FAIR RESULTS
On February 16th, the All Catholic Schools Science Fair Contest returned to St. Francis de Sales School. Ms. Gafner, Mrs. Escobar, and Mrs. Kiss participated in the judging along with representatives from each of the other five schools. We thank Mrs. Cathy Thompson, our Superintendent, for her presence as she led our students through the process and awarded our winners. We also thank Mrs. Carol Wilson for hosting the event!
