The Power of Connectivity
Some of the benefits of joining clubs, sports, and organizations
Numerous studies have shown the benefits of extracurricular participation. First and foremost, most students seek opportunities to meet others who share their interests. By joining a club or playing a sport, students often make life-long friends. In many cases, participating in these activities also helps students build their self-esteem, allows students to feel a sense of pride for themselves and their school, and allows them to experience and learn outside the walls of the school building. For example, some of our clubs have traveled internationally while our sports teams travel nationally to compete and experience new places. For those interested in post-secondary education, most colleges and universities are looking for evidence that students have been active members of their high schools by participating in clubs, sports, and organizations. Likewise, most admissions criteria highly value any leadership roles students have held in these activities. Employers are looking for students who can work in teams, have good interpersonal skills, and possess a strong work ethic. Students can enhance all of these areas by being connected to their high school.
What JCHS has to offer
While JCHS is a medium sized high school, it offers a wide variety of clubs and organizations. In August, we kicked off our "Live at Lunch" offerings with having a club day so that students could explore some of the offerings that we have. During their lunch period, students could go to the gym and speak with other students about clubs and organizations and learn about how to participate.
Some of the clubs that JCHS currently offers include: Academic Bowl, Art Club, Drama Club, Diabetes Awareness Club, Digital and Communicative Arts Club, Environmental Club, Extra Special People (ESP) Club, Fellowship of Christian Athletes, Fishing Team, French Club, Homecoming Committee, International Club, Key Club, Mountain Bike Team, Odyssey of the Mind, Prom Committee, and Student Council.
Career and Technical Student Organizations: Family, Career and Community Leaders of America, Future Farmers of America, HOSA-Future Health Professionals, Army JROTC activities, and Skills USA.
Honors Societies: Beta Club, International Thespian Society, National Art Honor Society, National French Honor Society, National Honor Society, National Technical Honor Society, and Spanish Honor Society.
Women's Sports: Basketball, Cross Country, Cheerleading (Competitive and Spirit), Golf, Gymnastics, Softball, Soccer, Swimming, Tennis, Track, and Volleyball.
Men's Sports: Baseball, Basketball, Cross Country, Football, Golf, Soccer, Swimming, Tennis, Track, and Wrestling.
Other Organizations: Chorus, Marching Band, and Yearbook.
How parents can help and how they can stay connected
We want to be connected with our families. Parents can encourage their students to be involved with their school and to participate in school activities. They can ask their children about their school day and come to support them when they compete or perform.
We also have a parent organization called JCAT (Jackson County Academic Team). JCAT provides parents and community members opportunities to support the school, to network with other parents, and to keep up with information from a parent's perspective. Similar to a PTA, JCAT supports the academic program like a booster club. For more information on JCAT, please contact them via Facebook or email them at jcatpanthers@gmail.com.
Finally, we hope that you will stay connected with us through social media and other outlets. We have summarized these outlets in one place in our Stay Connected document.
