Principal's Corner
Hello Meadow Park Families,
I hope, for our current families, that the first three months of school have been positive for your student. We have some fun events planned for the month of December, including a spirit week, class competitions, and our first ever Solving for X tournament. You will hear more about each of these as we get further into the month, but we are looking forward to another great month heading into winter break.
As always, should you have any questions, concerns, or comments please don't hesitate to reach out.
Make it a great week!

Quality Discourse in our Classrooms
As we focus on AVID strategies school-wide, students are exposed to various collaboration and discourse strategies. Two of the most commonly used strategies that engage the entire class are Socratic Seminars and Philosophical Chairs.
Mrs. Poole's 7th grade science class participated in a Socratic Seminar the Tuesday before Thanksgiving break about the production of palm oil. After reading a particular text, students brought forth questions they had after completing the reading. Students shared their questions and selected one to start the conversation. Students refer to the text to support their questions and thinking to engage in quality discourse.
On the same day, Ms. Fanning's 7th grade science class participated in a Philosophical Chairs activity around genetically modified organisms. In a philosophical chairs activity, there is a debate between two sides on any given issue. Students must support their opinion, while trying to convince their classmates why their side is better. Students are able to start with one opinion/side and switch during the conversation as they are persuaded.
Both of these activities allow students to think, question and share. It is delightful to witness students engaging in thoughtful discourse in order to further their knowledge. Way to go Eagles!
Shadow for a day at Beaverton High School
To set your 8th grade son or daughter up for a day to shadow at BHS, send an email to beavertonshadows@gmail.com. The BHS student leaders who support this opportunity will connect with you, after they receive your email, to arrange the shadow day visit.
Tech Corner
Common Sense Media has a “review” site that allows you to search for apps, movies, books, websites, TV shows, music, and games. Common Sense Media will tell you what you need to know as a parent, how the media ranks in quality, and which ages are most appropriate (from a parent and kid perspective).
When looking for resources, you can narrow searches based on your child’s age and interest. It’s an amazing resource, especially in this digital age where there are an overwhelming amount of media available to our kids.
We are prepared for for inclement weather, are you?
Erin's Law
In July of 2015, the Oregon Legislature passed SB 856 (Sex Abuse Prevention Instruction) which requires schools to provide child sexual abuse prevention instruction kindergarten through grade 12. Each year, every student will be required to receive at least four lessons on sexual abuse prevention. Erin’s Law also requires a professional training component for administrators, teachers, and other school personnel regarding communicating these topics to students, and a parental involvement component to inform parents about the characteristics of sexual predators and provide instruction on how to discuss these topics with their children.
The Beaverton School District values the importance of educating our students to make healthy choices, manage the demands of their lives, and to develop healthy coping mechanisms. The K-12 comprehensive health education curriculum adopted by the Beaverton School District promotes a rigorous and balanced skills based approach to teaching health, based on the Oregon Health Education Standards and Performance Indicators and Oregon State Laws.
The grade level learning targets and materials have been thoughtfully reviewed by district teachers, administrators, parents, community representatives and health professionals to insure that the content is medically accurate, developmentally appropriate, and acceptable to the community. Teachers have been trained in best practices for teaching health skills through the new curricula.
In all areas, parents and guardians are a child’s first and most influential teachers. Parents, guardians and schools share a common goal: we want students of all ages to be healthy in all aspects of their lives. Ask your child what he or she is learning in health education class in all lessons, not only those relating to sexual health.
Below you will find the parent information on our new health curriculum related to Erin's Law and its roll out in the schools. This curriculum is delivered during PE health instruction throughout the school year. Please call the Meadow Park Office and let us know if you have any questions or concerns. You are welcome to preview sample lessons in the office, as well.
