The Fairview Connection
MARCH 10, 2023
MESSAGE FROM PRINCIPAL OPHUS
Dear Fairview Families,
We’ve had a great week at Fairview! On Tuesday, we capped off our Falcon Rally festivities for this year by having a staff showcase pickleball match. The top four earning classes each chose a staff member to represent their class for this staff matchup and the top two classes’ staff representatives faced off against the next two classes’ staff representatives. Ms. Michalski and I played hard, but couldn’t overcome the pickleball skills of Mrs. Hermanson and Mr. McGovern with a final score of 21-19. The students enjoyed taking a break to watch the match, and it was a fun way to bring closure to Falcon Rally. Looking forward to next week, our students in grades 3-5 will participate in the Illinois Assessment of Readiness (IAR) starting Tuesday, and our 5th graders will also take the Illinois Science Assessment (ISA) starting Thursday. See below for more information. Thank you for taking the time to read through this week’s newsletter. Have a nice weekend and don’t forget to move your clocks an hour ahead this weekend!
Sincerely,
Dan Ophus
Fairview Principal
Illinois Assessment of Readiness & Illinois Science Assessment: Starting on Tuesday, March 14th, students in third, fourth and fifth grades will be taking the annual state assessment called the Illinois Assessment of Readiness (IAR). The table below shows the testing schedule for your reference. There are three math units and two English/Language Arts units for this assessment. Please try to have your children in attendance and well rested to best help them show what they know on these assessments. Make-up tests will take place after the regular testing schedule has concluded. In addition, on March 16th and 17th, our fifth grade students will be taking the Illinois Science Assessment (ISA), which consists of three testing units. The state utilizes the results of these assessments to report on our overall school progress on the state report card, which is published annually. Please be sure that students have fully charged their chromebook at home before coming to school on testing days!

NEWS FROM NURSE BRUNNING
STREP INFECTIONS ON THE RISE
IDPH and the CDC are observing an increase in strep throat -- specifically invasive group A streptococcus (iGAS) -- infections among children. Early recognition, diagnosis, and appropriate treatment of these diseases in children and adults is very important.
The following steps can prevent the spread of strep throat:
*Wash your hands frequently with soap and water
*Avoid sharing eating utensils with someone who is sick with strep throat
*Cover your mouth when you cough or sneeze
*Stay home when you are sick
*See the doctor when experiencing symptoms so you can be tested and treated
Symptoms of Strep
*Sore throat that can start very quickly and can cause severe pain when swallowing
*Fever
*Red and swollen tonsils, sometimes with white patches or streaks of pus
*Tiny red spots on the roof of the mouth
*Swollen lymph nodes in the front of the neck
