Thomas High School Freshman selected for International Contemporary Youth Ensemble

Kara Schenk, the daughter of Dave and Christy Schenk and a freshman at Thomas High School, has been selected as a member of Youth America Grand Prix’s first ever International Contemporary Youth Ensemble in collaboration with YGP Israel. Acceptance into this program was by audition or invitation and only 30 dancers were selected from around the world. YAGP is the world’s largest non-profit international student ballet competition and scholarship program.

Kara took her first ballet class at only 2 years old and has been training for the past 12 years at Odasz Dance Theatre in Brighton. She is a member of their pre-professional training program where she trains for 25-30 hours per week. Kara has competed with and danced alongside dancers from across the country and around the world through Youth America Grand Prix (YAGP), Universal Ballet Competition (UBC), American Dance Competition/Youth International Ballet Competition (ADCIBC), New York City Dance Alliance (NYCDA) as well as in many other local competitions and workshops.

Later this month Kara will travel with her mom to Herzliya, Israel to participate in this professional contemporary dance training and immersion program where she will train for 10+ hours daily. Kara will then be cast in pieces to be performed during the YAGP 25th Anniversary Gala Tour which could include performances at Lincoln Center in NYC, the Israeli Opera House in Tel Aviv, Israel, the Straz Center in Tampa, Florida, and in the Nervi Festival in Italy.

To say Kara is excited to embark on this new adventure would be an understatement. She is honored to have been chosen and is anxious to see where this new path may lead her.

Earth Club's Climate Catchup

Hi, my name is Stephen, and here is this week’s climate catchup. Did you know that Americans produce 25% more waste during the holiday season than any other time of year? Each year, 2.3 million pounds of wrapping paper end up in landfills across the country. To avoid this, we can try to reuse or recycle our wrapping paper this holiday season and use eco-friendly packaging products such as biodegradable tape and twine. Come join Earth club next Thursday for our sustainable gift wrapping day from 3:20-4:15 in room 205. Stay green Titans!
