At the end of each year, I clear out my text alert group so that Fifth Grade parents don't still hear from me next school year. In order to get signed up now for all the important texts next year, follow the instructions below.

Kindergarten Camp Returns!

We will be offering again this year a learning opportunity in the summer for our incoming Kindergarten students!! On August from 8:30 to 11:30, Wilbur will be hosting classes for Kindergarteners. Students will be able to get acclimated to the building and will begin with a variety of readiness activities. This camp will be FREE to parents, and students will interact with several of our Kindergarten teachers through the week. Students must be registered in order to attend. More information will be available at our Kindergarten Orientation on May 25.

Important Information

Based on the district policy, a child may be promoted, placed, or retained at the end of the school year. This decision is made by a school–based team that takes many factors into consideration, including report card grades, State Test scores, and assessment information. According to the Colonial School District policy, the guidelines are:

Promotion requires an E or M in reading, writing, mathematics, and either science or social studies in grades 3 – 5. In grades 1 and 2, students must receive an E or M in reading, writing, and math. In Kindergarten, students must be meeting the standard in at least reading and math. A student must be placed into the next grade if he or she has an N in the fourth marking period in any of the subjects listed above. Placement into the next grade does not indicate that the student has not had a successful year. Instead, it should show that skills should be worked on in the summer to ensure success in the next grade.

In an effort to get a head start on preparing our students for success here in the younger grades, we will be holding Spring Orientation Nights. If you have a student entering Kindergarten or First Grade, plan on being here on May 25 from 6:00 – 6:45 p.m. You will get to preview curricular materials and hear information about expectations. You will also get some great ideas for how you can work with your child over the summer to prepare.

In order to get input from as many parents as possible, we will be having our annual Parent Involvement Summit. At the May 4 meeting, we will have stations set up around the room and parents will rotate to give us input about different things for the upcoming school year. For example, we want to find out what you would like to see changed about our website, what activities we can provide you with to help your child on homework, what you would like to see added to the Parent Handbook, etc. The meeting will begin at 6:00 p.m. and will start with the election of PTA officers for the 2017-2018 school year. If you are interested in being an officer, EMAIL THE PRINCIPAL now at beth.howell@colonial.k12.de.us and attend this meeting. We hope to make this a fun and informational night that will help us to meet the needs of our families even better in future years.

Field Days will be here before we know it!

On June 5, students in grades K, 1, 2, 3, and 4 will participate in Field Day activities and will be outside for a portion of the day. Please make sure that your child comes prepared with sunscreen , sneakers, comfortable clothes, and water.

On June 6, our Fifth Graders will have an entire day of FUN. They will have Field Day activities from 9:00 to 11:00. We will then have a picnic lunch outside, which parents are welcome to attend. Finally, from 12:30 to 2:30, we will have the Fifth Grade Dance in our MPR. Parents are welcome to come and show them how it’s done!
