This is your Captain Speaking!
Hello Birdneck Family,
You did an amazing job of analyzing quarterly data and coming up with plans to support students. Our students are fortunate to have such a dedicated group of educators behind them. We noticed students are having difficulty with specific areas but also that many are struggling with stamina or test taking skills. As you review your data with students please remind them of the importance of always doing their best. Also, take some time to celebrate the successes of those who have made significant growth. I'm proud of the hard work you've been putting in to help our students succeed.
I hope our upper grade students are enjoying Fish in a Tree and our lower grades are enjoying Dinosaurs Before Dark. These books were purposely chosen to engage our students in conversations about the difficulties children may be going through in school or at home. I encourage you to use your morning meeting time this month as time for a read aloud with these books and a way to discuss the important lessons the books share. Below you can find more info about Literacy Month.
Captain out,
RV Yoshida
Literacy Month - READING IS MAGICAL!
Just as a reminder – here is the Calendar of Events for this month.
An exiting event for the students and staff this week is the Buddy Reading. The Literacy Team created a chart which connects two teachers with each other to coordinate a Buddy Reading opportunity or opportunities throughout the week. Please connect with the teacher you are paired with to determine the best time to swap classes or have students come to your class to read either the book selection or a book of choice. Have some fun and give your students the chance to practice their reading to other students or you can swap with the other teacher to read to each other’s classrooms. Buddy Reading
This coming week:
- Monday on announcements - Mrs. Rice will continue to share some quotes with directions on how students can submit their answers and win a prize.
- Please continue to work on your classroom door promoting your class’ favorite character/story/etc. Please have door completed by February 14th.
- Hats on! Students and staff can wear a hat, button, or t-shirt that promotes Reading/Literacy.
Please connect with any of the Reading Specialists - Amy, Jessica, Korrin or I and/or the Literacy Committee member on your grade level with any suggestions or questions.
Yearbook Quote & Class Pictures
If you have photos of activities that have been done in your class this year and you would like to add them to your class page in the yearbook, please post them in the Google Drive folder titled "Class Pictures". You can find this folder in the same folder where you post your learning plans. If you need help uploading photos, reach out to Monica and she will help you.
Schoology Workshop Wednesdays
You Make a Difference
She has a great, positive energy, attitude, and sense of humor. I get the pleasure of working with her every Wednesday and I love seeing the relationships and rapport she’s built with each individual student in her classroom. Her patience and passion for working with students with special needs is contagious and inspiring. I look forward to every Wednesday because of it. Despite whatever she has going on, I’ve seen her go above and beyond for her students and to assist Ms. Luttrell in her classroom. I’m glad to call her a friend and we are so lucky to have her at Birdneck.
You make a difference, Heather Crabtree!
SHOUT OUTS!!!!!
Please shout out Valero and Peterman for the decorations and everyone ( didn’t get all the names) who donated soup and all the other goodies we ate!! Thank you!
Monica would like to give a shout out to all 2nd, 3rd, 4th, and 5th grade teachers and students for a very smooth round of quarterly testing. There were very little technical issues that needed to be resolved and what issues did pop up, our wonderful faculty was able to resolve most on their own. Way to go Eagles!
5th grade would like to give Josh Brown a shout out for always going above and beyond to support us and our students. We are lucky to have you as part of our team!
Employee input survey
In the spirit of continuous improvement, we are asking all employees to complete the 2020 Employee Input Survey. The survey is being administered to all Virginia Beach City Public Schools’ employees as a way to gather input on issues that directly affect them as employees of the division. This survey serves as part of the Employee Input Process, referenced in School Board Policy 4-8, by providing employees with the opportunity to offer their opinions. Your responses will help guide continuous improvement throughout the division.
Below you will find a unique link to the survey, which you may access from either your home or work computer. To ensure your opportunity to participate, please do not forward this email. Click on the link below to begin the survey. Please respond to the survey by Friday, February 14, 2020.
Let’s enjoy learning together (and some cozy treats)!
