Specials S'more
What is your child learning this week?
Phonics: This week in Phonics students will be reviewing initial sounds and isolating sounds in a given word. Students will also be learning the digraphs wh and th. During this week students will work on the formation of their mouth with the digraphs, what words start and end with the digraphs and being able to sort words under the correct digraphs. Lastly, the students will be learning their new words and adding them to their sight word vocabulary (could, now, then, this).
Ways to help at home in Phonics: Draw the words is a great activity for a lot of kids, especially those who still struggle with writing or who thrive with visual representations. Read the words—whale, beach, sick. Then ask kids to draw it. Extend this activity, by having kids write the words and then match up their pictures with the right words.
Grammar : In Grammar, we will be reviewing what an adjective is. It is a word that describes a noun. The brown dog ran down the street. We also will be reviewing and working on writing a complete sentence. It always starts with an uppercase letter and ends with an end mark, like a period. Writers use complete sentences to help make their message clear and that a complete sentence includes a subject and a verb. The subject has a noun that tells who or what the sentence is about and the verb tells what that person or thing is doing or did.
Reading: The students will be reading two realistic fiction stories and a fiction story.. The stories are Get Up and Go, Stretch, and Rainbow Fish. The students will be reviewing story elements which consist of characters, setting, plot, problem, and solution. We will really be focusing on what the central idea and key details are in a story. One strategy that will help connect learning from home to school is to have the students tell you the central idea and key details in their guided reading book. Our new vocabulary words are: muscles, relaxing, take care, healthy, stretch, and friendship. Happy reading!
Writing- In social studies, students will be learning about their final two Texas heros: Harriet Tubman and Barack Obama. The main goal is for students to understand these people's contributions to not only America, but to Texas. You can help add to this dialogue at home by discussing traits of a good leader. All throughout this unit, we are constantly pointing out the hard choices these leaders had to make or ways they helped everyone.
-
Math- In math students will begin to learn about money. The first initial focus will be on the four coins and what their value is. Students will discuss ideas of when we use money in real life and it's role in our society. They will be learning how to identify what a penny, nickel, dime, and quarter are. They will also have to identify each coins attributes: color, size, texture of edges, and head and tail designs.
Social studies As we near the end of our good citizens of Texas unit, students will learn about Ann Richards and George H.W. Bush. Students will focus on how these citizens' actions impacted the history and make-up of Texas.
Science: After Spring Break we will begin Unit 10 Exploring Plants Needs and Structures. In this unit students will observe a plant and identify the things it needs in order to survive. Students will ask questions and make predictions on how changes in an animal’s environment will affect a plant’s ability to get its needs. This week students will learn the famous scientist Ynes Mexia, who is a known scientist for exploring animals and their environments. Lastly, students will also learn about the plants needs in order to survive and be able to discuss the following of plants can, have, need and are.
Ways to help at home in Science: Review and explain to students what plants need, you may use the acronym.L.A.W.N.S. LIGHT: just like we need to stay warm, plants need a warm temperature! Light keeps plants warm and helps to make food for the plants (through photosynthesis). AIR: just like we need air, plants need air! Air is used to make food for the plants (through photosynthesis). WATER: just like we need water, plants need water! Water helps move food and nutrients to all the different parts of the plant. NUTRIENTS: just like we need nutrients, plants need nutrients! Nutrients provide plants with the strength they need to grow big, strong, and healthy. SPACE: just like we need a place to live, plants need a place to live! Plants that have plenty of space will grow big, strong, and healthy.
