Wolcott’s Wednesday "What's Up"

Office of Teaching & Learning Update 10.9.2013

Since outdoor education is a curricular activity, we will begin adding the cost of outdoor education to 5th grade student registration fees each year. Students who have "waiver of fees" status are exempt from paying for such activities. Knowing you have already collected money from your students for this year's trip, we have developed the following plan: . Students with "waiver of fees" status should be refunded their camp payment. The district will be picking up the camp expense for these students. This will require a little coordination with the business office and the refunding of some money, but is the best course of action so we are completely compliant with Board policy. This also means the families with "waiver of fess" status will not suffer from the financial burden this aspect of our curriculum may cause during this time of year. Additionally, this means you will not need to pay the expense of those who cannot afford the trip out of your activity funds. We will talk about this in more depth at next week's admin meeting.

Gifted & Math Grades 3 and 4

In grades three and four, we identify students as "gifted in math" and also students who are capable of doing math at a higher level. Both need extra support to be successful.

Third and fourth grade students identified as "gifted in math" should receive support (via push-in services and lesson planning strategies) from the Gifted Specialist. Think of this similarly as the LBS provide support for our special education students. As it is not appropriate for LBS teachers to design specific lessons for our special education students, it is not the gifted specialist's responsibility to create different lesson plans for teachers to use with the students identified as "gifted in math". Lesson planning and creation for these students as well as the students identified as capable of doing higher levels of math occurs through differentiation. Knowing this is different from years past because we are not ability grouping, Rachel Manjarres will be offering some suggestions for differentiating math instruction to mixed ability grouped students during her half day training scheduled for next Thursday.

Rising Star Information from ROE

On Friday, I spoke to Marjorie Cave of the DuPage ROE. I explained to her our frustration of trying to get our Rising Star School Improvement Teams up and running on such a short timeline. Further, I told her that if we are going to do this, we need to do it right. After much discussion, she said it would be permissible for us to start the process slowly and develop a good working relationship between team members before rushing in and looking at indicators. If you need to spend a meeting or two, setting the purpose, laying out ground rules and building team relationships- DO IT!

We will be talking more about Rising Star at our next Admin Meeting. If you have questions before that meeting, please contact me.

Benedictine University Partnership- Help Needed (U Will Get $)

We have signed a partnership agreement with Benedictine University. For us it means we will be able to offer our staff some free graduate classes, they will adopt a couple classes and pay for them to go to the University for a tour of the campus and lunch, etc. From us they would like one or two administrators to review their graduate program curriculum and determine if coursework is "real world". They want to make sure they are preparing their graduate students with assignments that they may face in the "real" world. They would pay any administrators who are willing to help. Further, in the future (not this school year) they are looking to possibly have us host a methods class. Cool concept but too complicated to type out in a reasonable length. If you are interested or would like to learn more, please contact me.

Sandye Brown Follow-Up Visit- Tentatively Scheduled for January 22

What is the data in your school telling you about student learning?
