Fiona's Message
Kia ora Parents and Caregivers
Well, what an amazing presentation on Digital Safety by Rob and Zareen offered to all St Brigids’ School parents at Raroa Intermediate last Tuesday and Wednesday evening. Parents and teachers from a variety of schools shared how informative and helpful the sessions were. They shared the most important message which was, you as parents, need to know what your child is accessing online to help them in manage their behaviour. Check out their website ourkidsonline.info which was shared on the evening. There are some really startling statistics about New Zealand children and their online behaviour.
As adults it is our responsibility to proactively be aware of what children are accessing online so we can guide them. This parent evening was a fitting way for our Term 2 school wide focus to come to a conclusion.
“Digital technology and devices are used for design and communication.”
All teams have been undertaking work around being a positive digital citizen and posting their learning on Seesaw and on their classroom wall spaces as reminders of what we need to do to keep ourselves safe. Check out your child’s work about this learning and it might be a great talking point over the dinner table. We will be using the ideas students have gathered to update our Online Cybersafety Agreement.

2022 SEESAW - REPORTING TO PARENTS ON STUDENT PROGRESS AND ACHIEVEMENT
Seesaw is really taking off across the school with students sharing and reflecting on their learning and teachers commenting on progress being made. Parents are part of this process too, contributing valuable comments and feedback.
This type of sharing/reporting gives parents insight in the real-time learning of our tamariki . Students buzz, are engaged and so proud when they read and share feedback from their parents. These seesaw posts can be a great starting place for your child to explain what they are or have been learning about at school . Please ask them! These posts also show you the key competencies that are vital for developing 21st century learners who need a range of skills to navigate an ever-shifting workforce.
Here are some ideas Parents can say/do to help build key competencies:
Share the message with your child how time and effort pay off. For eg, when your child says, “This is too hard”, say,
“That’s great because now you have an opportunity to learn something new.”
When your child makes a mistake, celebrate it as an opportunity to learn. Help them to understand that making mistakes helps them learn.
When your child shares about giving up on a task, encourage them to stick at it a little longer and/or to try it another way
When your child says “That’s good enough”, encourage them to ask if it is really their best work.
Help your child to see problems are temporary, by saying they are glitches, snags, or hard spots and talking about things they can do to get through them.
Remember that Team Tahi (Year 0-2) and Team Wha (Year 7-8) have and will continue to share 2022 Reporting Posts. These posts share the progress and achievement of your child in relation to year level expectation. A written report will be shared for our Team Rua and Toru students.
So……..
Team Tahi - are using Seesaw for 2022 Reporting Posts throughout Term 2
Team Wha - are using Seesaw for 2022 Reporting Posts throughout Term 2
Team Rua - will send a written report at end of Term 2
Team Toru - will send a written report at end of Term 2
All teams will have Learning Conversations (Whakawhiti Korero) early in Term 3
All Reporting Posts/Written Report will share student progress and achievement in Reading, Writing and Mathematics
ALL Parents and students will have an opportunity for a Learning Conversation (Whakawhiti Korero) with the teacher early in Term 3, Wednesday 3 August and Thursday 4 August. Watch out for the sign up for this soon.
Are you parking or stopping illegally when you drop off or pick up your children?
Please be considerate when parking, and think of the safety of other children and the movement of other road users when you are dropping off and picking up your tamariki from school.
Subsidiarity - Empowering Others
Students have been listening to many bible stories about the Holy Spirit. They have been thinking about how the Holy Spirit helps us in our daily lives. We celebrated a beautiful School Mass on Friday 3 June with the theme “Pentecost - Empowering Others. Our tamariki have been working on learning about Subsidiarity (Empowering Others) as part of Religion. There are many displays shared around the school to remind staff, parents and tamariki about our role in this.
