LVHS Weekly!
Excellence In All We Do.
May 21, 2019
Sorry this is a day late! I was at golf and then last night I went to my high school volleyball coach's retirement reception in San Antonio. Wish you all could have been there because it was such a great reminder of how much of an influence you all have (especially if you coach) on our students. It may takes years to realize...but you make an impact. Make it a great one!

Grades - the scoop
Directions for Reporting Grades for Final Nine Weeks and Semester Grades.
1. All grades for work assigned for the final nine weeks should be in your grade book by 8am, Friday, May 24th. Proof sheets will be run as soon as all staff have posted their grades. Any delay in posting will cause EVERYONE’S GRADES to be delayed.
2. Remember to enter meaningful citizenship grades. Refer to the rubric for guidance. Students earn recognition for excellent conduct grades…it matters what you enter.
3. Students can be given 0’s for individual assignments and exams; however, no student should have a 0 for a nine weeks grade average. Any missing nine weeks grades should already have been corrected.
4. Make sure you have updated grade book to reflect nine weeks grades for new students. Check with Mrs. Huerta if you have questions about grades for new students. New students will need Semester 1 grades as well, so that you can calculate a final grade for the year.
5. If a student has missed your final exam, enter a zero. If they make it up in the summer, we will update the grade accordingly.
6. If a student has missing assignments for the nine weeks, enter zeros for the grades and calculate the grade with zeros entered. Again, if they make up assignments, we can change their grades later.
7. Proof sheets will be run by 8:05 am Friday, May 24th. An announcement will be made to pick them up from the front office when they are ready.
8. When you receive your proof sheets, make sure each student has a second nine weeks grade, semester exam grade, or 0 if they missed it, X if Exempt, semester grade and final grade.
9. Remember, you cannot assign a 9 week or semester grade on the report card higher than 100.
10. Double-check any 9 weeks grades of 68’s and 69’s. Please review grades prior to submitting.
11. Examine your proof sheets carefully. Make any corrections to the proof sheets in RED INK.
12. After report cards are run, any corrections to semester exam grades, or semester grade must be made by Ms. Becker. Submit these changes to Ms. Becker in writing by email.
13. Final check-out with proof sheets will start at 9:30 am Friday, May 24th with Ms. Becker, Mrs. Huerta, and Mrs. Slaughter. If you haven’t signed up for a time slot, please do so immediately.

Testing students with accommodations
When they get there, the AMAZING Heather Sutton will send them to the location they need to go. She is keeping track of who is and isn't using accommodations, so it is important for these students to check in with her.
Email her with any questions.

DENOTING EXEMPTIONS IN GRADEBOOK
Students must attend class even if they are exempting the test. If they miss, they have to take the exam they miss!
There is no such thing as a school-approved senior prank
The students have been told multiple times that there are consequences for their behaviors during the last week of school the same as there has been the first 2000 days of school!
Plan for iPad Pick Up
Senior iPads will be collected prior to their departure to their Senior trip.
Tech folks will be sending a tech person to your classroom on Thursday, May 23, but your help in collecting the devices will be needed. You will pick up the students' iPads during 7th period. So, don't plan on using iPads during 8th or 5th that day.

Graduation Details
Staff will need to pick up a graduation gown from Mrs. Huerta prior to graduation and will need to report to the aux gym by 5:15.
All staff is required to attend. And don't forget...if you didn't help with prom, we really need your help folding chairs after the ceremony!
MAKE SURE YOU ARE DOCUMENTING THE PHONE CALLS AND EMAILS TO PARENTS REGARDING STUDENTS WITH FAILING GRADES. YOU WILL HAVE TO TURN IN THIS DOCUMENTATION AT THE END OF THE SEMESTER. PLUS, PARENTS CAN HELP!
You must give a final exam
Reasons you need to give a final (in case you need some):
1. It will be used to provide you with feedback on your student's mastery of TEKS in your class.
2. It is 20% of their semester grade.3. It is used as an attendance incentive.
4. It gives students a reason to come to school and attendance = money.
5. It makes the last three weeks of school meaningful when they know they are going to be assessed on what they are learning.
This year, you will need to turn in a copy of your exam to Dr. Johnson. She will be signing that line on your checkout form.
YOU WILL NEED TO GIVE HUERTA DOCUMENTATION THAT YOU HAVE CONTACTED ALL PARENTS OF STUDENTS WHO HAVE FAILED YOUR CLASS. EXPECT A FORMAL REACTION IF YOU DO NOT PROVIDE THESE DOCUMENTS.
Old, but important, stuff -
Sub Plan Requirements
Subbing is a really hard job. We need to do whatever we can to make it easier for them.
You should be receiving a purple folder that will have your name on it. Inside, there will be all kinds of goodies preloaded in it for our subs:
- A copy of our bell schedule.
- Our master schedule.
- Phone number listings.
- Hall passes.
- Advisory expectations.
- A map of the school.
- Any other information the teacher wants you to have.
- A quick classroom feedback form for the teacher. Please leave this on top of this folder at the end of the day.
IN ADDITION TO THIS, when you are gone, you should include in the purple folder:
- Specific lesson plans for the sub to follow, including a schedule of your classes.
- ROLL SHEETS TO TAKE ATTENDANCE EACH PERIOD.
- Your classroom expectations and suggestions for classroom management.
- Helpful teachers to turn to in case they have questions or concerns.
- Details on specific student needs, such as assignment accommodations, health concerns, or small group testing, if applicable.
You may place these in your purple sub folder or you may leave directions in the purple folder on where to find your plans. Do not assume a sub will know where your plans can be found.
When a sub calls me and says, "I don't think they left me any plans/roll sheets", my response will be - "Look in the purple sub folder."
Very serious - Read - Update grades weekly...
...This includes entering zeroes for assignments that are missing. While I know you are trying to give the student some grace by not entering zeroes for missing assignments, it is not a very effective way to communicate a true reflection of their grade. I've received more than one email from parents lately about lots of grades/several zeroes being entered the morning of progress reports.
In summary, enter grades weekly, even if they are zeros. UNLESS it is for a student who gets extended time through 504/SpEd and it is still within their extra time allotment. :)
first 15, last 15 minutes of class are a no fly zone. don't allow students to leave your class during these times. first 5, last 5 during advisory.
School Safety - You are a big part of it
- Keep your classroom door locked.
- Always make sure visitors have a badge. If not, alert the front office immediately. Ask the visitor to go get checked in.
- Never prop open doors, including the outside doors.
- Encourage students to share concerns about other students - using SafeAlert (you should have an info poster in your room) or by confiding in an adult.
- Take concerns and threats seriously - contact the office if concerns arise.
- Be in the hallways during passing periods.
- Don't be afraid to be a little paranoid - alert the office if you have a concern ASAP.
- If you see something that should result in a lockdown (think active shooter), be prepared to use the phone system to alert the school. Do not count on someone else to make that call.
Advisory norms
1. Students who have failed a course for the semester shall not be allowed to leave advisory to attend a club. I will send out the failure list tomorrow morning.
2. In order for a student to attend another teacher's advisory, they must have a pass from that teacher.
Stop sending kids to other teachers classrooms without a pass from that teacher, please. Don't send a kid to another classroom unless you have written correspondence with that teacher that you want them.
STAY ALERT SYSTEM REMINDER!
Users may anonymously report concerns 24-7-365 via the StayALERT website, an e-mail, a phone call to a recorded and monitored line, or via a text message from a cell phone. Photos and video clips pertaining to the StayALERT report may be included. No special app required! Reportable information will be forwarded in a timely manner to a pre-designated school official for review.
