Week of November 12, 2018
- During Readers' Workshop, we began our Lucy Calkins Unit of Study on Non-Fiction books. We learned that non-fiction readers look closely at pictures and story words to make meaning of what they are reading.
- We also learned about Text and Graphic Features. Text features are the words ~ italicized print, labels, chapter titles, etc.
- Graphic features are the pictures, diagrams, and charts.
- We learned that Text and Graphic Features help us understand more about a story and help us with reading comprehension.
- During Cafe, we completed centers by playing "Pumpkin Punctuation," unscrambling words to make a sentence and then, adding the correct punctuation mark. We also completed, "Roll a Story," by rolling a die and then using the number we rolled to determine the characters, setting, and problem/solutions.Once we determined the story elements, the we wrote a story using our rolled story elements.
Writers' Workshop~
- As writers, we completed publishing our Small Moment Stories. We added a cover to our books as well as a back cover. We even completed an All About the Author page.
- On Friday, we shared our published Small Moment stories with friends from the other second grade classes.
Mathematicians~
- As mathematicians, we completed our Unit 2 Math Assessment. We also completed a Cumulative Review Assessment demonstrating our knowledge of all the math skills we have learned thus far.
- Then, we began Unit 3 by completing an Open Response. When looking at Double Tens Frames, we have to determine the number represented. Then, we had to explain our mathematical thinking on how we determined the number. For example, if one ten frame had 8 dots and the other ten frame had 7 dots, you would conclude that 8+7=15. We would realize that if we slid 2 dots from the 7 over to the 8 tens frame, then we would have a full tens frame with 5 dots left over in the other tens frame and 10 + 5 =10. So, 8+7=15.
- For Fun Friday, we played various Turkey math games. Be sure to check out our Fun Turkey Math games below
Science~
- As scientist, we explored solid materials a bit deeper. If liquids can be described by the property: "You can poor a liquid," are all materials that you can pour are liquid? More specifically, we looked at rice, mung beans, pinto beans, cornmeal, and Lima beans. As scientists, our focus question was, "Are these materials solids or liquids?
- During the investigation, we discovered that the materials are solids. Although you can pour these solid particles like a liquid, unlike liquids, you can form these solid particles into shapes, piles, and lines.
- We also explored with shaking bottles filled with the particles to learn more about their reactions and properties. We learned that some of the materials, like rice get static and cling to the sides of the container. Also, the surface of these materials is bumpy, unlike the level surface of liquids.
- Then, we experimented with the solid particles in bottles to observe how they react when rolled, shaken, and tipped. We learned that air fills tiny spaces between the particles.
Other Activities~
