Report Cards
The county has been diligently working with our revised NC Standards and PowerSchool Pro, which is the new gradebook where teachers record grades. The new gradebook has presented challenges in both Math and ELA, resulting in report cards being delayed for the district. Please expect your child’s 1st quarter report card and a letter explaining the new criteria to come home on Monday, October 15th instead of today, Friday, October 12th. We appreciate your patience and flexibility regarding this matter.
Building Strong Mental Wellness
Please join us on October 16 at 6:30pm for an exciting collaboration between elementary, middle and high schools in Holly Springs! Whether in early elementary or nearing the end of the K-12 journey in high school, we are all striving to build within our students the ability to be socially and emotionally healthy enough to make the most of the opportunities that are available. On October 16, the schools are inviting parents from all three levels to begin a discussion on mental wellness or, how we build the capacity for students to have strong emotional and social health. We will do this in the context of how our students build these skills in a world of social media. This is a discussion format and you are an important part of the process!
We hope you will join us at Holly Springs High in the cafeteria at 6:30pm on October 16. If you have questions, please feel free to reach out to HSHS Principal Brian Pittman (bpittman@wcpss.net). Since this is a collaboration amongst many schools, we ask that you RSVP if you’re planning on attending by using this link. This helps us with planning but please feel free to attend whether you RSVP or not.
STEAM LAB
Parents-Can you help us STOCK OUR STEAM LAB?
According to the U.S. Department of Labor, 85% of the jobs that will exist in 2030 haven’t even been invented yet! In addition, 65% of today’s school children will eventually be employed in jobs that have yet to be created! At Holly Springs Elementary School, we are working to create a STEAM Lab for our teachers to reserve that will provide a space for an exposure to STEAM education that will inevitably help students to develop the processes necessary to problem solve creatively, effectively communicate, and think deeply about real world situations.
See the flier attached here for information on how you can help us stock our STEAM Lab! Thank you for your support of our students and staff at HSES!
Literacy Night
Pre-ordered dinner will be served by the 5th grade committee and will be available from 5:00-5:30PM in the cafeteria. Each meal will include 2 slices of cheese pizza, chips and water for $5.00. Please complete the pre-order form and return to your child's teacher.
National Bullying Prevention Month
October is National Bullying Prevention month, and WCPSS is preparing for a month of activities to help celebrate and bring awareness to our efforts around bullying prevention. Here is a great resource for parents to use at home!
October 24 is Unity Day – wear orange to unite around kindness, support and inclusion.
The WCPSS Communications Department will be posting information on the WCPSS website for parents and the community, and we will be tweeting your highlights and pics throughout the month of October. Tweet your pics @WakeSchCounslor and @WCPSS using #SpeakOutWCPSS
READvolution
For the second consecutive year, WCPSS will partner with the Carolina Hurricanes to bring READvolution to all elementary schools. This exciting partnership will support a community-wide literacy campaign around daily reading outside of school, plus allow students the chance to attend a Hurricanes game.
This year the READvolution time frame will be between Monday, Sept. 24 and Friday, Nov. 16, 2018. Your child will be able to be part of this event by reading daily for 20 minutes!
This year’s challenge features both individual and school-wide components, as well as goals for each.
The individual component will include the following:
● Through an online tracking system, students will provide their name and the number of minutes read each day. Please see the log-in instructions.
● Students who achieve the goal of reading 20 minutes per day throughout the allotted time frame (for a total of 800 minutes) will receive two complimentary ticket vouchers to a Hurricanes home game.
This information is available in Spanish HERE and more information can be found on the WCPSS READvolution site found HERE.
Thank you for your willingness to participate in the READvolution program! We appreciate this opportunity to build lifelong readers and learners in our community.
