Region
Hawksbill Turtles are found in coastal regions, usually in shallow waters. They are mostly found off the coastlines of the beaches in North Carolina.
Why it's in danger of extinction
- habitat loss of coral reef communities
- the harvest of their eggs and meat
- incidental capture in fishing gear
- commercial exploitation
- general threats to marine turtles:
-oil spills
-plastics and other non-biodegradable materials thrown into the ocean
How it's being protected
- treaties and agreements prohibit international trade
- Fishing:
- gear modifications
- changes in fishing practices (when turtles are nesting/migrating)
- time and area closures that limit when and where fishing can take place
- restrictions on shrimp catching in order to not harm the turtles
