September

Sept. 6 - Labor Day - NO SCHOOL

Sept. 10 - Progress Reports

Sept. 24 - Staff Development 1/2 day for students (11:30 a.m. dismissal)

6th Grade - Off to a good start!

Things have been rolling right along for the TJMS 6th Grade. The hallways are still bustling, but the students are starting to settle in! You can see the ‘middle-schooler’ confidence that wasn’t there before.

Wow, Time Flies!

It’s hard to believe that we are in our 3rd full week of school! Please make sure your students have all of the supplies needed for their classes. We have noticed that many students still do not have earbuds.

What’cha Reading?

All 6th grade students are getting ready to start reading Touching Spirit Bear by Ben Mikaelsen. It’s a story about Cole Matthews, a troubled teen who experiences a life-altering encounter with the mythical Spirit Bear.

Parents--if you could please:

Check grades and assignments on Skyward/Canvas weekly.

If you see a missing assignment, communicate with your child and let them know it needs to be completed/turned in.

Contact your child’s teacher with any questions/concerns if your child is struggling academically—We all want your children to be successful!

7th Get Involved with Extracurricular Activities

7th grade is off to a great start this year! Students are settling in and learning the procedures of 7th grade. If your student is looking to get involved in extracurricular activities, TJMS is proud to offer many different options. We encourage all students to be involved in at least one extra curricular activity. To get more information about what sport, activities and clubs are available, please visit the 7th grade Canvas page for more details. As a reminder, students are also able to attend athletic events both at the middle school and the high school.

8th grade- The Final Middle School Frontier

Can you believe it? Your child is now in their final year of middle school. It probably seems like yesterday when they were frightened, anxious, and hopefully a little excited as they entered the doors of TJMS for the first time.

Many changes can occur in three years. And in 8th grade, one of our goals as a team of teachers is to transition your child into high school. Throughout the year, we will engage in several activities to help prepare them for that next step of high school. Some events that will occur include:

*Class of 2026 t-shirts with designated colors by Viking Time

*PSAT testing in October

*Career exploration and surveys with our guidance counselors

*Information and presentations regarding colleges, specialized training programs, and vocational education

*Programs based on planning for the future and finances

*High school scheduling

We look forward to not only teaching your student curriculum, but we hope to prepare them for what lies ahead as well.

*If your child is quarantined: It is imperative that they log into Canvas every day. If you or your child have any questions please reach out to their teachers via email. We are here to help you!

Strolling Strings

Strolling Strings will start Wed. Sept. 8, 3:00-3:45 in the orchestra room. This after school group is open to any student who plays an acoustic string instrument. The goal is to learn traditional songs by rote or memory in order to perform with more mobility. We will meet every other Wednesday. First performance will be playing the National Anthem for the TJMS vs BFMS football game on Oct. 19 at VHS. For more information, contact Mrs. Nord (snord@valpo.k12.in.us).

Media Center News

Our media center is bustling with class visits and student traffic! Students are expected to bring a free reading book to all of their classes; so, talk with your son or daughter about the book he or she has chosen for independent reading.

Parents can browse Destiny Discover to see what’s available to your child. If you’re interested in book suggestions, follow the link connected to each title in the list below. You can also contact our Media Specialist, Jennifer Hurley, for a one-on-one conversation about how to find the right books for your child.

Happy reading, everyone!

Builders Club

Are you interested in building a better community while building new friendships? Then Builders Club may be for you! Builders Club is TJ’s service organization sponsored by Sunrise Kiwanis. If you were involved in K Kids in elementary school, this is the middle school’s counterpart.

There will be a call-out meeting after school on Wednesday, September 8 in the Flex Room. Join us to learn about the projects we will be doing this year and how to join! Meetings are held after school on the first and the third Wednesdays of each month. If students are involved in sports, they may still join and participate in projects around their sports schedule. Contact Mrs. Janowiak or Mrs. Haines if you have any questions.

Life’s most persistent and urgent question is:

What are you doing for others?

Uniforms can be purchased as a set or individual pieces. The same uniform will be worn in 6th-8th grades, so purchasing one that’s a little looser may be a good idea. Students are welcome to use the uniform an older sibling used while attending TJMS.

Students who are not enrolled in band, choir or orchestra will have a full year of P.E. Students enrolled in band, choir or orchestra will have least 2 rotations of P.E. during the year.

School Calendar and Times

The 2021-2022 Valparaiso Community Schools calendar can be found here.

Our school day runs from 7:50 a.m. -- 2:50 p.m. Students may enter the building at 7:20 through door #8 to eat breakfast or at 7:35 to head to their lockers and 1st period class.

Sport Physicals

A sports physical dated on or after April 1, 2021 is good for the 2021-2022 school year. If your student is planning to tryout or participate in a sport this school year, please don't wait until just before the season begins to schedule a physical. A physical done this summer or fall is good for winter and spring sports as well. All forms in this packet need to be completed and turned into the main office as one packet.

Student Handbook

Each student will receive a student planner early in the school year. Included in that planner is a copy of the TJMS student handbook. The handbook can also be found here. Please encourage your student to keep their daily planner up to date with class due dates and other important classroom, grade level or school wide dates.

Attendance

Please call the main office at 531-3140 by 8:15 a.m. if your child is absent from school. If we have not received a call by 8:15 a.m. and your child is marked absent from school, you will received a automated phone call alerting you of his/her unexcused absence.

Becoming A Canvas Observer

Parents are encouraged to become an observer of your child in Canvas. Being an observer will allow you to monitor your student's work, assignments, etc that are assigned through Canvas. To see more about how to sign up as a Canvas observer, click here.

Dropping Off Forgotten Items

From time to time students do forget things at home that they may need during the school day (i.e. music instrument, lunch, chromebook, etc). If this occurs, items may be dropped off on the table in the front lobby, just inside door #1. Please make sure your student's name and grade level are clearly marked. We will then email your student to let him/her know to stop by the main lobby to pick up the item(s). Please encourage your students to check his/her school email account a few times throughout the school day.
