Corruption in the Church
During the Middle Ages
Clergy Members
Many parish priests were illiterate and couldn't properly perform religious services. Nuns and priests took part in sexual relationships despite taking vows of chastity. Many bishops abused their powers, lived in luxury, and wore extravagant clothing.
Pardons
Originally, pardons (or indulgences) were supposed to be given by priests to followers who wanted to be forgiven for their sins. But Pardoners became greedy and sold them to anyone who wanted one.
Corrupt Practices
Some church members would charge money to visit holy relics. Others would falsely claim that random objects were in fact holy ones. Additionally, they would sell Church positions to the highest bidder as a way to make money, regardless of that person's religious practices.
