Mindfulness
During the month of March, Lane counselors delivered a lesson on Mindfulness to all 6, 7 & 8th grade students. Students watched a video called Flipping Your Lid to understand how the brain functions in times of stress. When we flip our lid, it means to have lost control or the inability to no longer think or act clearly. Mindfulness practice helps to be present in the moment and tap into our thinking part of the brain so there is more control of emotions and more reasoning. Some of the strategies students learned are the following:
Mindful Waiting
While waiting in line, encourage students to find one thing to focus on in the hallway or classroom and try to remember everything they notice. They can also look for something new they’ve never noticed before.
Drop in/ Grounding
This can be done sitting or standing. Encourage students to be still and bring all their attention to their feet, shoulders, arms or other part of their body. Try to remove tension and bring all of the focus to the body and not on their thoughts or what is going on around them. Encourage students to take deep breaths.
7 Shakes
Students stand and complete seven shakes each in the right arm then left arm, right leg then left leg. Repeat this six times, five times, four times, three times, two times and then once.
Through base groups and within the classroom, teachers are further encouraging and engaging students in these strategies to enhance the learning environment.
Future Social Emotional Learning Lessons
Peers with Purpose
Peers with Purpose is comprised of high school students in the district who have pledged to be alcohol and drug free. In April, Peers with Purpose student leaders will present to all 7th graders a lesson designed to encourage students to resist peer pressure and avoid unsafe choices. We are grateful for these peer leaders in our district who are willing to share of their time and commitment with Lane students.
AODA (Alcohol & other Drug Abuse)
Students in grades 6 and 8 will receive a lesson in April about alcohol and other drug abuse. Current drug trends and the effects drugs have on the human brain and body will be discussed. One key to helping young adults avoid alcohol and drug use is to let them know how much the risks outweigh the benefits. When students know that drugs are more harmful than they are good, studies have shown they will be more willing to say no to these unhealthy choices. Lane counselors will be delivering these lessons.
College for Kids & Teens/UW-Milwaukee campus
Looking to keep your child busy over summer? Want to keep their learning processes sharp? They can do both through UW-Milwaukee College for Kids and Teens. Classes include such courses as foreign language, theater, mythology, American Sign Language, weather and nature, and so much more. Google College for Kids & Teens. Registration for Summer 2019 is now open. Some tuition waivers are available for eligible families. You may also Google pre-college programs for other opportunities.
Youth Frontiers
Our school believes that to do well in school, students need to feel physically and emotionally safe. In our ongoing effort to create a safe and caring culture, we are having a Youth Frontiers Courage Retreat® .
Youth Frontiers (YF) is a nonprofit organization that has been delivering retreats to schools since 1987. They provide schools with experiences that inspire character, civility and community so that our next generation of leaders is grounded in character. Last year, YF worked with nearly 124,000 students and educators throughout the country.
On the Courage Retreat, the YF Retreat Staff will focus on creating a more positive school community by engaging students in a variety of activities that enhance self-confidence, empathy and connectedness. This high-energy, interactive retreat is scheduled for for the grade class and will be held at . To reinforce the positive effects of the retreat, we believe it’s important for the entire community to be involved in supporting and communicating the messages delivered on the retreat.
Because of this, we encourage parents and caregivers to inquire about their retreat experience once the student returns home by asking the following questions:
1. What activities did you find fun?
2. What were the small-group leaders like?
3. What were some of the social fears that you discussed during the small-group conversations? 4. What’s a fear you really struggle with?
5. What is one thing you can do tomorrow at school to show more courage?
Visit youthfrontiers.org/courage-retreat for more information on Youth Frontiers and to watch a video about the Courage Retreat.
Principal Message
Dear Lane Families,
The Forward Exam tests all students in the areas of reading and math and select grade levels in science and social studies. One or more subtests may be administered daily during the identified time frame and it is very important that your son or daughter be in school during this time. Students not in school on the scheduled testing days will be scheduled for a make-up test prior to the close of the testing window.
Forward Testing will start March 19th. Below are two links for families. I have included the Family Brochure that explains testing and Lane's testing schedule.
As 3rd quarter is coming to a close, continue to use the Skyward Portal is check grades. If there ever is a question, please contact the classroom teacher for clarification. We view the connection between school and family vital in student success.
In addition, we are planning events as we move into 4th quarter. We are creating opportunities to increase family engagement; we are building and improving our classroom libraries to increase access to literacy; and we continue to build the sense of belonging by working with the Peace Center.
