Reminder-Deliveries for students
4th - 6th grade families
Dear Parents and Guardians of 4-6th graders,
On Thursday, February 21st the Kansas City Lyric Opera will be visiting Ray Marsh Elementary School to perform an opera called “She Never Lost a Passenger.” It is a wonderful story following Harriet Tubman and the Underground Railroad. Fortunately, 28 of our students will be able to participate and sing in the opera! Students who are chosen to be involved will do a little bit of background acting, help with props and set changes, and of course sing!
How does my student sign up? If your student is interested in being a part of the opera, please have them come to a quick after school meeting/rehearsal this upcoming Monday, February 4th from 3:15-4:00. During the rehearsal, they will list their name on a sign-up sheet and begin learning some of the songs for the opera. If your student wants to participate, but is unable to make the initial rehearsal, please email me their first and last name as well as grade level. Since we have so many talented and capable students at Ray Marsh who would be a perfect choice for the opera, I have decided to enter all students who are interested in participating into a drawing.
How does the drawing work? In order to fairly represent each grade level, I will draw about 9 names for 4th, 5th and 6th grade at the end of the day on Thursday. Students who are chosen will be notified by their classroom teacher on Friday morning.
Rehearsals: I will be holding four after school rehearsals for students who are chosen to participate. There will also be a rehearsal during the school day on March 18th for the students to work alongside the opera singers. I am asking that the students come to at least THREE
AFTER SCHOOL REHEARSALS, if not all.
- Rehearsal one: Monday, February 11th from 3:15-3:45
- Rehearsal two: Monday, February 25th from 3:15-3:45
- Rehearsal three: Monday, March 4th from 3:15-3:45
- Rehearsal four: Monday, March 18th from 3:15-3:45
Does it cost money for my student to participate? No! Signing up for and participating in the opera is completely free. I will provide the music scores and the opera will provide the costumes/ other things that are needed. All your student needs to do is show up and sing :)
What if my child is not chosen? Though I wish every student could be chosen, I am only allowed to choose 28. However, ALL students will learn some of the songs during class and learn about the opera. ALL students will also get to attend the opera since the performance will be at Ray Marsh Elementary during the school day on the 21st.
Can parents watch? Of course! Parents are welcome and encouraged to come see the opera with us on the 21st. The opera will start at 9:45 am in the Ray Marsh Elementary Gym and last approximately one hour. There will also be an opera talk-back session following the performance that could last anywhere from 30-40 minutes.
I am really looking forward to this performance! The students are going to have such a great time working alongside and/or watching these talented professionals! If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to reach out and ask me.
Thank you,
Niccole Winney
