December 2019 Newsletter
Halmstad Elementary
As we move into December many of us look forward to the fun and excitement that the holiday season brings but it also might come with added stress. Some of the fun and excitement might include time with family, friends, activities that are preferred and opportunities to catch up on rest! For some, holidays also bring stress and/or challenges. Some challenges might include adjustments in structure and routine, all that comes with preparing for holidays and how weather and darkness impacts us from day to day.
We are fortunate to be able to partner with agencies who provide us with reminders on how to best take care of ourselves and those we care for. We are reminded by our friends at REALiving to eat well, drink well, and sleep well. This means to make sure we do our best to make healthy decisions on what we chose to eat and drink. While sleep may be compromised during the holiday seasons we can do our best to rest by doing things like sitting quietly or taking time away from others to reduce the stimulation. As we get closer to the return to school from holiday breaks it is helpful to get children into routines so they get adequate sleep and are best prepared for learning.
Here's to hoping the upcoming holidays are enjoyable!
My best,
Jerim DesJarlais

Interview with Veterans-4th Grade
The fourth grade students were privileged to have the opportunity to interview veterans from the surrounding area, including some students’ family members who traveled to be a part of this special project. In October, fourth grade students learned how to conduct an interview, and they brainstormed questions they’d like to ask the veteran they were paired with. While the teachers were preparing the students, Mrs. Dahlke and her father Mr. Rudesill were busily making arrangements with local veterans to participate in the interview.
When “interview day” arrived all the students and veterans met at Chippewa Valley Bible Church, next door to Halmstad, to utilize their large multipurpose room. Each veteran had 2 - 3 fourth grade students to visit with. The students took their questions and had their pencils ready to record the answers. All the students knew they would be writing a biography for each veteran with the information they got. They were respectful listeners and eager to gather as much information as they could.
For the next three weeks the fourth grade students wrote and illustrated beautiful biographies for each of the veterans. The teachers saw awesome collaboration between the students as they put these books together with their interview team.
Finally, on Friday, November 15th, the students got to meet again with their veteran, but this time they got to give them the gift of a beautifully written and illustrated book. The veterans were so appreciative of the biography the children presented to them. It was an amazing experience for both the students and the veterans.
We have special appreciation for Mrs. Dahlke and her father for orchestrating this project.
