Students, the voting is underway for the first WHNT News 19 & Jack’s Pep Rally of the Week for 2014! This week, we are in the running with Bob Jones, Huntsville and Austin. Voting ends at 4:00pm. on Wednesday, August 27. WHNT News 19’s pep rally crew will visit the winning school later in the week for the pep rally. Huntsville already has over 1,000 votes, so we have some catching up to do. Let's vote Trojan Nation!

The flu vaccine will be offered at school on September 3rd from 11:00am-12:30pm. In order for students to participate, they must complete the Teach Flu a Lesson Form and return it to the school nurse. The deadline is August 28. The nurse from HNH will administer the FluMist Quadrivalent or the injectable flu vaccination. The parent must specifically request the shot, if this is preferred. Students with health insurance will be covered with no co-payments, deductibles, or out of pocket expenses. If you have PEEHIP insurance, you and your child will need to wait until the Wellness Program in October which is sponsored by Alabama Department of Public Health. If you have any questions, contact the school nurse at jjones@madison.k12.al.us
Cross Country - The total cost of cross country this year will be $100.00. The cost will cover the uniform (which we will use again next year). a t-shirt, and the races for each runner. These fee's may be paid online at www.myschoolfees.com. The last day to pay this fee is Friday, August 22nd.
Senior Parent Information Drop In Night - August 25. Mrs. Hutchison available 4:00 – 6:00; Balfour Representatives available 5:00-7:00 to meet with parents. Meeting will be in the lunchroom.
Balfour Reps on Campus August 26-27 - Balfour representatives will be here during all lunch periods to collect money and discuss any purchases for seniors and other grades.
NHS will have informational meetings for juniors or seniors interested in joining NHS on Tuesday, August 26 before and after school and Thursday, August 28 after school in Mrs.Freeman's room.
Picture Retakes for underclassmen will be on October 14th. Retakes will only be available to students who were absent or bring a note from a parent requesting the retake. Morning tech students will need to have photos taken BEFORE they leave for tech at 8:30. Photographers will be ready to go at 8:00.
Girls tennis tryouts have been postponed until Monday and Tuesday of next week.
Letterman Jacket Orders - There will be an NEFF Rep taking orders for letterman jackets on September 4th during lunch. A $100 deposit will be due at that time. The order form can be found on the school website.
Scholar's Bowl - Any student in grades 9-12 interested in participating in Scholars’ Bowl should plan to attend practice after school in Mr. Hunter’s room, S112, on Wednesdays. Every year our school has multiple teams that compete, and there are several spots available for those who can think fast and have a desire to learn more!

The United Way Youth Leaders Council (UWYLC) brings together students from schools all over Madison County to form a group of future leaders dedicated to improving the quality of life in their community. Members of the YLC focus on three major objectives over the year: Servant Leadership, Philanthropic Leadership, and Needs Awareness. Throughout the year students will commit to spending a minimum of four hours a month on community services. They will also meet local agencies in the community and assist in raising funds that will be allocated to different youth-focused organizations at the end of the year. Students must have and maintain a 2.0 GPA to be an active council member. Applications can be found online at http://madisoncountycares.org/whatwedo/youth-council . The application process runs until August 22nd.
Today’s Youth, Tomorrow’s Leaders (TYTL) is for 10th, 11th and 12th grade students who will be trained by community leaders (law enforcement, media, political, public health, educational) to effectively address the dangers of prescription pill abuse and heroin at local assemblies, school assemblies, youth groups, churches, and civic groups about prescription pill abuse. This group of committed youth will meet on Saturdays: September 13 and September 20, 2014 from 8:30 am – 12:30 pm, at the new Huntsville Police Department’s North Precinct located at 4014 North Memorial Parkway. Lunch will be served at no cost to the students. Contact Mrs. Hutchison if you are interested.

The Future of Public Education tour will highlight important topics for students and families in Alabama, including PLAN 2020, the Alabama College- and Career-Ready Standards, student testing, accountability, and the importance of parental and community involvement. The tour will be kicking off at Lee High School, 2500 Meridian Street, in Huntsville, on Tuesday, August 26, 2014. Huntsville Hospital Athlete of the Week - Applicants must be a high school senior, have a minimum GPA of 3.5 and display a history of athletic and academic accomplishments, as well as community/civic involvement. All weekly winners are invited to a banquet held in their honor in May, and two students are selected as Athletes of the Year. The two Athletes of the Year each receive a $1,000 scholarship. Wendy’s High School Heisman - Seniors who excel in academics, athletics, and community involvement apply by October 3 at www.wendyshighschoolheisman.com. List Mrs. Hutchison (ahutchison@madison.k12.al.us) as the school contact. To be eligible, a student must have maintained at least a ‘B’ grade point average, participated in one of the 27 sports officially sanctioned by the National Federation of State High School Associations, and demonstrated active involvement in his or her community.
National Winners receive:
- Recognition during ESPN’s national telecast of the college Heisman Memorial Trophy presentation in New York City
- A Wendy’s High School Heisman trophy and Heisman Patch
- $10,000 for their high school

Red Cross Youth Leadership Committee - The American Red Cross of North Central Alabama is now accepting applications for the 2014-2015 Youth Leadership Committee. The committee is made up of select high school students living in Madison County and Limestone County who engage in leadership development through the planning and implementation of community service activities and events to further the mission of the American Red Cross. The Youth Leadership Committee is open to high school students (14-18) living in Madison County and Limestone County who are passionate about helping others and developing leadership skills. College Fair in Atlanta - 100 Black Men of Atlanta, Inc. invites you and your students to the 2014 College Fair on Saturday, October 4, 2014 from 10:00 a.m. until 3:00 p.m. Meet admission and financial aid officers from a number of Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) along with other majority colleges and universities from Florida, Louisiana, Alabama, Tennessee, North Carolina, South Carolina, and Georgia. Delta Gems - Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Incorporated announces the open enrollment of their mentoring program. Revision to Pre-Approved Absence Policy- Students requesting pre-approved, excused absences will need to turn the form in to Mrs. Sharp at least 20 days before the planned absence. Forms can be found on the school website.
Procedure for Riding the Bus with a Friend - Any student who plans to ride home on a bus with a friend or to another address should follow the procedures below. No student will be allowed to ride to a different address without verification of parent/guardian approval by a school official.
1. A parent/guardian note should be turned in before first block to the receptionist desk at the back of school. The note should contain the address and information for the bus driver and should include the date and a correct phone number for verification purposes.
2. Pick up the verified note from the receptionist during lunch.
3. Give the note to the bus driver when entering the bus at the end of the school day.
Juniors Have Free Access to ACT Online Prep - All juniors received a personal user name and password to the ACT Online Prep website. This is a great resource to be used in preparing for the ACT Plus Writing assessment which will be given to all of our juniors students on April 23 during school. First Priority/FCS meets every Tuesday morning at 7: 20 in the Choir Room. All students are welcome to attend.
Parenting Assistance Line: PAL is a service where anyone can call a toll free number 1-866-962-3030 and receive useful, practical information and assistance with developmental and parenting questions and concerns. Available 8:00am – 8:00pm (central time) Monday – Friday.
Recycle: Going green at “the Green”. The Hazel Green High School Special Education Department needs your old cell phones and ink cartridges. Items to be recycled can be given to a Special Education teacher or left for collection at the office. Your support of our recycling fundraiser is greatly appreciated.

Driver’s permit: Students /Parents, remember to pick up the Student Enrollment Form before you go to get your permit. The driver’s license department will not allow you to take the test unless you have this form and it cannot be faxed after you get there. These forms are good for 10 days only.
