Understanding American Democracy
In seventh-grade social studies, students simulated the beginnings of American democracy as they participated in the Constitutional Convention. Each student represented a member of the convention as they presented their background and regional interests at the simulated convention, led by General George Washington.
The aim of social studies is the promotion of civic competence – the knowledge, intellectual processes, and democratic dispositions required of students to be active and engaged participants in public life. Civic ideals and practices enable students to learn about the rights and responsibilities of citizens of a democracy, and to appreciate the importance of active citizenship.
See the students in action on the D103 YouTube channel, the school's Facebook page, or in the Google Doc folder.
