A Leader in Me Lighthouse School "Make Your Mark"
April 12, 2018
Principal's Corner
During the period of April 17, 2018-May 17, 2018 our third through fifth graders, along with other students across Michigan, will be participating in the state-mandated Spring 2018 Michigan Student Test of Educational Progress (M-Step). The knowledge and skills upon which these tests are based are an integral part of the core curriculum of the Holly Area School District. More information regarding your child's specific testing experience will be sent home prior to each grade levels testing window.
The most important thing parents and students can remember going into the spring testing weeks is that M-STEP is just one, narrow measure of a child’s real learning in school. Each and every day your child is also learning communication, collaboration, critical thinking skills and building confidence in themselves. Most of these skills are not represented on the M-STEP, but are critical to your child’s learning and what we value and teach daily. Standardized tests alone cannot adequately measure most of the skills your child will learn throughout their K-12 years.
Please be sure to support your child’s success with reinforcing a good night of sleep and time for breakfast on the morning of the test. Share your confidence in your child’s ability to do his or her personal best on this year’s M-STEP assessment.
Please contact the school if you would like additional information or have further questions about the tests. Additional information can also be found on the state website:

District Art Show/Empty Bowls Fundraiser
Please join us as we celebrate the artistic talents of the Holly Area Schools students. Holly Elementary has 79 artists in the district art show. Congratulations to all. (See names below.)
Also on that night we will be having our Empty Bowls Fundraiser. Proceeds from this fundraiser will benefit the Blessings in a Backpack weekend food program here in Holly. All bowls were created by the students, staff and parents of the district. Families can help in many ways:
- Purchase a pre-glazed bowl for a minimum donation of $5.00.
- Purchase an unglazed bowl for a minimum donation of $10.00 and visit our family glazing station and add your own artistic spin to your bowl. You will be able to take this bowl home with you, after Mrs. Marchbanks fires it in the school kiln to make it food safe.
Don't miss out on this exciting evening!
Kids Read Now
Holly Area Schools has recently partnered with Kids Read Now to prevent the summer reading slide and close the achievement gap. Students in Young Fives through Third grade will be participating in the program that will allow them to receive nine free books through August 31st. Students, with help from their teacher, will choose the nine books they want to read over the summer.
On May 31st, Holly Elementary will host a Family Reading Night in conjunction with our Celebration of Learning where students receive their first three books. Starting in June, each time a student reads a book and you report it by phone, text, or online, the next book is shipped directly to your home. Again, this program provides your child with 9 new books to keep, absolutely free!
Is your child a 4th or 5th grader? Don’t worry, we have a plan for them too! More information for our students in the upper grades will be shared in May.
