Sawnee DEER Day - Dec. 20th
As our semester and ‘That’s a Wrap’ celebrations come to an end, we will be holding a school-wide DEER Day on 12/20! This will be a full-out reading day (no winter centers, movies, or clean-up sessions on the 20th).
Here are some ideas to help you create a fun and engaging DEER Day:
- Create a fun atmosphere (flashlight reading, bringing blankets for the floor, use the interactive board to show a winter wonderland and low playing music in the classroom, etc.)
- Create different experiences for literacy (storyline online reader, guest mystery readers, read to another class, etc.)
- Encourage students to have a stack of different things to read (magazine, novel, picture book, poem, sales ad of toys, etc.)
- Have students create a poster of their favorite book to hang around the school for a gallery walk…..encourage students to put the title, author, and a short description of the text.
- Model for students: Teachers bring their OWN stack of reading materials and pick a comfy spot to join the kids.
- Read in different areas: Visit the media center, outdoor classroom (bundle up), spread out in the hallway, sit by the Christmas tree in the front, etc.
F&P Assessment Time
F & P kits have been delivered to 1st, 2nd, and 3rd.
After each upper level assesses (please pay attention to your time line), please send your kit to the next grade level.
The following are the timelines for upper grades:
3rd grade: 11/4-11/29
4th grade: 11/30-12/10
5th grade: 12/11-12/18
If you do not receive a kit during your time line, please notify Farise.
Note: 3-5th -During this assessment window only—you need to assess students who were on grade level or below. If a student assessed at the beginning of the year above grade level and they are continuing to show you progress, you do not need to F & P them during this mid-year check.
December Choice Board
Overbooked: A Sawnee Reading List
Kayla recommends (and got Cahill to read) One of Us is Lying by Karen M. McManus. It is a quick read and tough to put down. Goodreads.com teases this book with "The Breakfast Club meets Pretty Little Liars, One of Us Is Lying is the story of what happens when five strangers walk into detention and only four walk out alive. Everyone is a suspect, and everyone has something to hide."
Are you looking for a non-fiction read that will have you laughing? Consider Maeve in America by Maeve Higgins. Higgins is a comedian from Ireland who documents experiences as an immigrant in America. There are thought-provoking questions, but also moments were you will actually laugh out loud (be warned if you do this at your son's basketball practice you will get strange looks from the other parents).
