The Week at a Glance
Weekly Concept: Our Natural Resources
Essential Question: How can things in nature be used to make new things?
Next week our class will be reading stories about natural resources. Children will learn how they can use things in nature to create new things.
Here are some activities that you can do with your child to help reinforce the skills we will be practicing.
Word Workout
Vocabulary: natural resources, create
Discuss different natural resources with your child. For example, talk about how we use trees to create, or make new things that people use every day.
My Words to Know
High-Frequency Words: where, look
Write the words where and look, then ask your child to write each word. Think of sentences that include each word. Read the sentences together and have your child underline the words where and look.
Category Words: food made from grain
Explain that grain is a plant grown in soil. Soil comes from the earth. Invite your child to cut out pictures of foods made from grain and make a collage.
Phonics: long o
Have your child guess words that include the long o sound, as in no, hose, rose, bone, and rope. Give a clue and act out the word. When your child guesses the word, write it on a piece of paper and have your child circle the letter o.
Illustrator Visit
Children's book illustrator, Steve Harpster, visited LES on Tuesday and gave an informative and hands-on presentation to students K-2 on how to make simple illustrations out of letters and numbers. Thank you to the LES PTO who provided each child with his or her own sketch pad. The students had a ball! Make sure you visit the following website for more fun hands-on lessons:
Basket Bash
Don't forget to bring the family out for a fun-filled evening on Tuesday. Look for our basket, which is titled, "Fun Around the Fire Pit." Once again, thanks to all of you who contributed toward the items in our basket. The Basket Bash is one of the PTO's biggest fundraiser and, quite frankly, without your support this event would not be possible.
Junior Achievement Instruction
We are welcoming Alex Nocton from Bath State Bank to offer instruction of financial literacy. He was here today, and he'll continue his visits for the next two Fridays. Be sure to ask your child what (s)he learned today about wise choices and wants vs. needs.
Sunglasses Request
Don't forget to send in an inexpensive pair of sunglasses for your child to be practicing with for our upcoming Grandparents' Day on April 27th. (NOT "expensive," as was incorrectly typed in the previous newsletter!) Not many have done this yet, and we want your child to know what to do with them on this special day.
Grandparents' Day
Speaking of Grandparents' Day... I've also not gotten many RSVP forms back indicating whether or not your child will have a grandparent in attendance. I am resending this form to those of you who've not yet responded. Remember, we want this form returned even if grandparents are unable to come.
In addition, I have placed in your child's Friday folder some "lines" that I'd like your child to memorize. Please practice these nightly until your child can recite them by memory, as these will be a part of our Grandparents' Day program on the 27th.
Liberty Elementary School Kindergarten Roundup
Please help us to spread the word that Liberty Elementary School's Kindergarten Roundup is scheduled for Thursday, April 13. Children must be five years old by August 1, 2017 to attend. Parents need to call the school office (458-5521) and schedule a time to register between 8:30 - 3:15 on the 13th. Parents need to bring the student, a certified birth certificate (not a hospital record), a record of immunizations, proof of residency, drivers license and custodial papers if applicable. Please enter door #37 on Layman Street across from the Auxiliary Gym. School will be in session for the current KinderKids on this day.
