- Have a safe Halloween!
- School wide behavior: We have already begun our weekly lessons focusing on school wide behavior and our school wide rules: BE SAFE, BE RESPECTFUL, BE RESPONSIBLE! You can find the lessons we will be teaching on our school calendar on the website. Students will be taught the weekly lesson on Monday or Tuesday by their teacher. Check it out on the school calendar! In addition to the weekly lessons, students will also be recognized for doing their best by receiving Sparky Tickets or ROAR Tickets. Students are recognized for going above and beyond to be safe, responsible or respectful and can earn special prizes and privileges for their Tickets.
- SCHOOL SHOUT OUTS! Every day we give shout outs to our students staff during our morning announcements. Students and staff can write a special note of appreciation to recognize someone on campus for their support. We have a shout out box for parents in the office if you would like to recognize someone on campus, let us know!
- NEW BALL WALL MURAL: A HUGE thank you to Dennis Mortensen for painting a beautiful Sparky Dragon on our new ball wall for our lower grade playground. Next time you are on Campus you should check it out!
- Attendance Matters: We've noticed an increase in late arrivals and early pick-ups. Please drop-off students on-time and avoid checking them out early, if possible. Late drop-offs and early pick-up causes disruptions in the classroom and to your child's learning. If your child is LATE, you will need to walk them into the office and sign them in

MUSIC NEWSLETTER
October, 2018
What’s going on in the music room? Our patriotic song of the month is America, lyrics by Samuel Francis Smith, and our composer of the month is Danny Elfman (1953-). We are having a great time listening to his film and TV music, including The Nightmare Before Christmas, Batman, and many more!
1st Grade: The first graders have been exploring basic music concepts, such as loud/soft and fast/slow. They have also been learning to keep a steady beat. Ask your student about The Old Gray Cat and Grizzly Bear. We are learning some fun Halloween songs, such as Pumpkin Stew and Halloween.
2nd Grade: The second graders are practicing steady beat and basic rhythms, building on the basics they learned in 1st grade. They have been working on Head & Shoulders, Oats Peas Beans, and Clickety Clack, as well as Halloween songs, such as Pick a Pumpkin.
3rd Grade: The third graders have been continuing work on Rocky Mountain, learning how to read the rhythms and to do a folk dance. They will be continuing this work with songs like Lil Liza Jane, and Uncle Joe. Their main Halloween song is Halloween Night.
4th Grade: Mrs. Middleton’s and Radtke’s class is singing rounds, such as Are You Sleeping and Ghost of John, in multiple parts. They are continuing their “Mallet Madness” unit and are practicing proper mallet hold while playing Bate, Bate Chocolate and other songs. They have also been learning about the pentatonic scale.
5th Grade: The 5th graders have begun their ukulele unit and will continue throughout the month of October. They have learned the C, F and G7 chords and will continue to work on strumming technique with songs like Yellow Submarine, This Land is Your Land, and You Are My Sunshine.

Good To Know
- BUCKLE UP: We've gotten many reports that our precious students may not be properly buckled in when getting dropped off and picked up from school. Current California Law States:
Children under 2 years of age shall ride in a rear-facing car seat unless the child weighs 40 or more pounds OR is 40 or more inches tall. The child shall be secured in a manner that complies with the height and weight limits specified by the manufacturer of the car seat. (California Vehicle Code Section 27360.)
Children under the age of 8 must be secured in a car seat or booster seat in the back seat.
Children who are 8 years of age OR have reached 4’9” in height may be secured by a booster seat, but at a minimum must be secured by a safety belt. (California Vehicle Code Section 27363.)
Passengers who are 16 years of age and over are subject to California's Mandatory Seat Belt law.

- Dogs on Campus: We love our furry friends but please keep them off campus. If you are walking your children to school with your dogs, please say your good-byes before you step on to campus. Not everyone loves dogs and it can be scary for some. We appreciate you keeping your four-legged babies off of school grounds. Thank you!
- The garden did great over the summer thanks to a few fabulous CCC families! Since back to school, 367 students visited the garden during our three Garden Days. They harvested 12 red, ripe watermelon with the largest over 28 pounds and 20 winter squash, buckets of potatoes, tomatoes and peppers! They got to taste these too! Extra watermelons and tomatoes were also served on the lunch salad bar! The winter squash and potatoes will soon be another lunch option. Our summer garden is now finished and we will be starting our fall/winter garden. Stay tuned!
- Did you know our Student Handbook has been updated? You can find it on our website here: http://ccces.wpusd.org/Parents/Student-Handbook/index.html
- Choir meets every Monday from 1:50-2:50
- Please remember that supervision for students begins at 7:45am. There is no supervision for students prior to that. Please plan your mornings accordingly, we want our students to be safe!

Parking & Drop Off
Please note that parking is at a premium, particularly now that we have so many new families who joined us this fall. If you are arriving early and waiting with your child in your car, please consider parking along the street to ensure our staff can find parking when they arrive.
Entering Campus
If you are walking your child onto campus and plan to go past the big, black gate, you must sign in at the front office and obtain a visitor badge to be on campus. Remember to sign out when you leave as well. This helps us to account for everyone that is on campus.

Science Newsletter
I’m Mrs. Karp, and I’m so excited to be teaching science to your students. Our curriculum is called Mystery Science, and it includes lots of thinking, experiments, and videos to help your students learn. It meets the new Next Generation Science Standards, which include three parts: disciplinary core ideas (content knowledge), science and engineering practices, and crosscutting concepts (ideas found in multiple subject areas). These standards move away from basic memorization towards the application of learned material.
Hopefully, this will be my only newsletter. I hope to have finished my website by the end of September, and you will be able to check there weekly to see what your student has been doing. Some time this week, your student will be bringing home a scientist of the week sheet for you to work on together. I would love for the center rectangle to be a recent photo of your child. This will be on display in the classroom. If you have any questions, please contact me at jkarp@wpusd.org.
First Grade Observation: Their first mystery is “Why do scientists know so much?” They have been
observing, thinking, writing, and drawing to answer this question.
Second Grade Properties and Phases of Matter: Their first mystery will be “Why do we wear clothes?”
They will figure out the different properties of different materials by observing and experimenting. Be on the lookout for a very unusual hat by the end of September.
Third Grade Forces and Motion: Their first mystery is, “How can you beat a group of grownups at
Tug-of-war?” They are conducting an investigation on balanced and unbalanced forces, also known as “Hopper Poppers.”
Fourth Grade / Chapman
Energy: Moving things get their energy from stored energy, and energy can be stored in different ways. They observed this when they made their rubber band racers and used them to carry out an investigation of the mystery, “How can a car run without gas?”
Fifth Grade Chemical Reactions and Properties of Matter: Alchemists were the scientists of long ago,
and we will be trying to change one material into another with pennies and alchemical solutions. We also are trying to figure out why gargoyles from long ago are so deteriorated.
Funderburgh Sound: They have been learning and experimenting with how cartoons get their sounds.
